The wife and I are heading to SF in a couple weeks to stay with some friends. Rough outline of the trip. Mainly looking for restaurant and bar suggestions, but open to any attractions as well.

Day 1- drive from SF down to pebble beach. We might head down to Big Sur. Head back up the coast and stay in Sausalito that night

Day 2- Muir Woods in the morning, Golden Gate pics, Alcatraz, and Giants game that night.

Day 3- Wine country. Our friends are taking the lead on this.

Day 4- China town, Coit tower, etc. Definitely open to other must do’s in the city.

Sausalito
Copita Tequileria y Comida
Spinnaker (Old school 1960s modern dining room on the water, good seafood) Good place to have just a drink too, the views are really nice.
Sushi Ran
Fish (very casual)
Sartaj India Cafe (off the beaten path, small, casual)
For a bar, No Name Bar, they have some live music and it gets crowded with locals.

If you have a car, driving around the neighborhood in the hills above downtown has some really nice views but the streets are super tight with windy roads and you can easily get lost. There are also hidden stairs that you can walk up to the top of the hill but you have to know where you are going or you'll never find them. This Google Map shows the stair locations, you get to basically walk next to people's houses and yards.

We went to Bay Area a couple of weeks ago to visit family. Stayed in Santa Cruz mountains between Half Moon Bay and San Carlos-beautiful part of country. Went to Sausalito for day and ate at Fish- it was fantastic. Walked around town some after meal. I remembered eating at breakfast place on Bridgeway many years ago.

If possible, take a ferry to San Francisco from Sausalito. Good way to see the bay.

Big Sur is a must see if you're that close ( Monterey).

Day 1…drive down (280 to 85) to Los Gatos, get on 17 to Bear Creek Rd and on to Skyline Blvd. take Alpine Rd toward the the coast, then to Pescadero Creek Rd down through the redwoods. Eat some cream of green chili soup at Duarte’s then head down 1 till you get to Panther Beach, which is easily found on Google maps. Then to Pebble.

Panther Beach

Magical place.

I was definitely considering this and there is really nothing stopping us as we don’t really have set plans that day besides staying in Sausalito that night.

If you are flexible, consider staying in Monterey or Carmel that first night instead of driving all the way back. Casanova in Carmel is outstanding restaurant, and aquarium in Monterey is a great 2 hour visit.

My wheels are turning on that right now actually. Muir Woods and Sausalito the next day are the primary reasons I was considering going back that night. But now I’m hearing Muir Woods is overrated.

I’m going to Napa in August. There have been multiple discussions with good recommendations (for all the locations) but the search function on this site sucks. Google “Napa Tigerdroppings” (or SF, Monterrey, etc.) and you’ll find threads from years back. There is one regarding Napa on the food/drink board that comes up too.

Regarding Monterrey there was a recent discussion that had a lot of input. Seems it was only a month or so back on the travel board.

Muir Woods if very overrated in my opinion. You can walk a 100 yards in and get the gist. You've got to see Big Sur and walk around Carmel.

The PCH south of Carmel is pretty empty early in the morning.

If you can work that into you schedule, do that. Big Sur is beautiful.

Tickle Pink Inn in Carmel-By-The-Sea is reasonable.

You need to walk about Carmel, one of the best meals I've ever had was at Aubergine (Link)

I loved Muir Woods but it's exactly the wrong direction for you.

I'm a Steinbeck fan so Monterey is a big deal for me; the Aquarium, not so much although the sea grass there is cool to see.

The Giants games are cool, check the weather before going.

I wore a Mel Ott repro jersey there once and got several free beers from old line Giants fans.

Have a great time.

There's a Holiday Inn Express on Cannery Row that is very nice and reasonably priced, and within walking distance to lots of sights in Monterey. If time is limited, you can stay in Monterey, but walking about Carmel is the way to go. Carmel is maybe a 10 minute drive away, if that. I actually lived in Monterey and attended elementary school there when my Dad was flying in Vietnam. Now that I've gone back as an adult, I know understand why Carmel was my Mom's favorite place on Earth.

If you're in Napa eat lunch at Gott's. Great roadside burger joint.

Dinner can be fancy.

Flying into sfo, driving down to pebble beach and then back up to Sausalito is a very very long day, especially with traffic. I would suggest staying the first night in Monterrey, go to the aquarium, then head to the Marin the next morning. Or skip Monterrey and stay the first night in Marin, but traveling from a couple hours south of San Francisco to saulsalito plus trying to see things is gonna be a lot to take in.

Sorry for the hijack but we booked a condo up around Castroville/moss landing which is about 15 miles north of Monterey (still on bay of Monterey). Anyone know much about that area ?
