I know it's early, but trying to decide whether to go with an outfitter/tour group for this type of trip or if it's something i can pull off myself. Travel calendar is full until the summer, therefore I'm planning for October. Trying to figure out the following:

Fly into and out of where? Phoenix/Vegas??
Rent vehicle and just travel between these areas?
Where to stay?
Do we just wander around in these places or upon arriving in Sedona/Zion/GC hook up with operators that will guide us

I used the search function and found many threads but not really detailed enough to answer these questions. There appears to be "caravan" operators and didn't know if they are really necessary.

TIA

If you can get it, look into booking a cabin on the north rim of the grand canyon at least for one night, it doesn't open til a bit later in the year than the south rim though.

Stay near Zion and try to do the Narrows and Angels Landing.

Flights into Vegas are pretty cheap. Definitely rent a car. October is a great time to go. There are decently pried hotels close to most of the parks. We booked a hiking trip to Havasu Falls a couple of year ago and had an amazing time. I would just get a guidebook for most of the places and explore yourself. I can give you our itinerary if you are interested.

We did Vegas (1) to South Rim (2) then around the canyon to St Georges (2) to visit Zion and back to Vegas (2) in a rental car. Great trip and the ride from the GC to Jacob Lake to Zion is great for views of AZ and Southern Utah

Vegas->Zion->North Rim->Sedona->Pheonix

Don’t use a tour, you can rent a car and do it yourself. My family did it last November and I did as part of a 30 National Park road trip this summer. I’d suggest going to Bryce Canyon while you’re at it. Don’t sleep on the state parks in Utah either, Kodachrome Basin and Coral Pink Sand Dunes are both phenomenal.

with regard to Zion try your hardest to get a room inside the park at the lodge. With a room there you can drive up the main road and avoid the shuttles. While in Utah you will definitely miss out if you don't also go to Bryce (you can see/hike the amphitheater area in a few hours) and then capital reef. Of the three I saw the coolest shite at capital reef and you'll have the place basically to yourself

Did you actually visit them and spend time or did you see the sign and leave? That's quite a bit for one summer... which ones did you see? Or are you referring to NPS sites in general?

We are doing Sedona/Antelope Canyons/Grand Canyon in April.

I would definitely fly into Vegas/Phoenix and out of the other depending on which order you want to go in.

Rent a car and finding places to stay is easy.

Just research on the Internet to find things to do in each place, no need for a guide unless it's something specific like a rafting trip or something.

I would definitely try to stay in the park at Zion. You should be able to do most things yourself. Lots of great hikes to choose from.

Thanks to everyone who has responded in this thread. Nearly everyone mentions hiking on your own however we are not hikers we're more Beach people but are fit enough to do hiking. In these different places do you just grab a map and hit the hiking trail kind of on your own or are there groups or group hikes that can be taken together?

I spent time in them, I usually did a couple hikes and drove some of the 4x4 roads in my Jeep. It was a 3 month endeavor, and the time of my life.

Arches
Canyonlands
Capital Reef
Bryce Canyon
Zion
Great Basin
Yosemite
Kings Canyon
Sequoia
Joshua Tree
Death Valley
Grand Canyon
Suguaro
Guadeloupe Mountains
Carlsbad Caverns
Mesa Verde
Great Sand Dunes
Black Canyon of the Gunnison
Rocky Mountain National Park
Grand Tetons
Yellowstone
Roosevelt
Wind Cave
Badlands
Mammoth Cave
Coyahoga Falls (saw a Dead show at BMC)
Shanendoah
Smoky Mountains
Congaree

I also went to the CWS as well as various national forests, monuments, and battlefields. I started at the beginning of May and finished mid August, I didn’t get much sleep but I sure had a blast.

Don't stay in the park, see below, it's less than a mile to the south gate. Oscar's Cafe is also good after a day of hiking/biking.
