Stay at the Hyatt Wild Oak Ranch nearby.

Second staying at the Wild Oak ranch. We went last year the first week of August and it was brutally hot. Paid extra for the behind the scenes tour which starts before the park opens and ends right at opening. Got to feed some sea lions, seals, and see the dolphins and belugas up close. Touch sharks and stingrays and some other animals. Prepare to be gouged on every single thing you do and I highly recommend not going in August. Kids enjoyed it, but we have officially checked San Antonio off of our visit list. Zoo was pretty disappointing.

F no. Some genius decided to make all the walkways in Sea World out of asphalt. In San Antonio. Your son will be wiped the hell out in three hours in the summer. The heat from above, combined with the heat emanating from the blacktop... There are trees providing some shade over the blacktop, but it will be a suck fest.

If you have the option, I would swap the dates of the trips to make it semi-tolerable.

Why not go tubing or something in the hill country? There are a lot of ranches which host exotic wildlife for hunters that may offer tours in the San Antonio/ South/Central Texas area that could be an option. There is also a Tiger sanctuary in Tyler (I won't vouch for there being anything else to do up there for a kid that age, lol.)

The 5 year old will probably like it, but it is a lot worse than San Diego or even Orlando.

Went in 2019. Was very well priced and the kids loved it but Schlitterbahn was the big hit with them.

We did both in the weekend.

They're is also a six flags there that has an attached water park.

you can see "whales" at both Sea World and Schiltterbahn.

Went last July with my wife and kids. Kids were 3 &4 at the time. Do not recommend. It was miserably hot, crowded and you’re stuck standing in long arse lines to eat shitty food. Not to mention paying like $650 for parking, stroller rental and food pass. The orca show was pretty cool though.
We stayed at the Hyatt others mentioned and the kids probably had more fun playing there than they did at Seaworld.

SA in general is like New Orleans. A fine city to visit in the spring or fall, but miserable in the summer.

Schlitterbahn is a nice day, and a 5 year old isn't going to get much out of river tubing... so not sure what else you would do. 5 year old won't enjoy the hill country wineries. Maybe they enjoy the caves, maybe not.

With a kid that age, that's a Thanksgiving week type trip.

I went in August last year. It’s hot, but throw on a swimsuit and breathable shirt and plan to do things like eat, water rides/activities, and indoor/covered shows in the afternoons. If you are staying nearby, you can leave and come back too.

They’re improving the park and it shows. Won’t be on par with big theme parks or the SeaWorld San Diego and Orlando, but you will still have fun.
