I love San Diego. Obviously the beaches are nice.

San Diego Zoo is the real deal for a zoo if you're into that.

Outdoors-wise, there are a ton of options and it is temprate enough you won't get killed in July. La Jolla is nice and just a short drive north. Depends on what you're into.

I've been to Padres games and they're fun. Downtown location of the ballpark is convenient to a lot of things there.

USS Midway Museum is fun if you're into that.

La Jolla. Kayak the caves or snorkel with the leopard sharks. Both were great. Take in a ball game at Petco Park. Of course, the zoo, also check out Balboa Park.

Unless you are in a BUD/S class, then it sucks.

What the others have said, but I'll add Torrey Pines and Gaslamp / Little Italy

The views from there and Point Loma are amazing. Definitely worth checking out.

I'll echo a few things. Take the water taxi over to Coronado and walk around or rent a bike. Check out the island and the resort. While at the resort, check out the beach there. Hard to beat. Grab some fish tacos at Miguels while you're near the resort.

Catch a baseball game at Petco. Beautiful ballpark with excellent beer and food selection. Before or after the game, walk around the Gaslamp District. Grab a beer or six at Half Door Brewing. Little Italy is worth seeing as well.

If you have kids, some places to check out would include Legoland, The Zoo, and Seaworld.

Second the water taxi over to Coronado
You can access the beach at the Hotel Del Coronado without staying there as well as eat in the restaurants and walk the grounds of the hotel

Very nice hotel. If you go to San Diego, you have to spend a day in Coronado and go there.

Balboa Park, La Jolla, Coronado, Torrey Pines for a nice hike, lots of outdoor activities that don't cost a dime.
