Trying to decide between the 2 cities for a family vacation - wife and 20 month old.
Where to stay?
What to do?
Which city is better?

Doesn't really matter, the entire trip is going to revolve around taking care of the 20 month old anyway.

We did San Diego with an 8 month old in April.
It was great. The your kid will love the zoo. I doubt your toddler will like Alcatraz as much, although I loved it.
And travel board.

I would say go to SF now while your kid is very young. As they get older, there's not as much to do for them there. Now, you can do different things and don't have to worry about holding their attention as much. When they get older, go to SD. Sea World, Lego land, Zoo, Animal Park, Beach, etc.

Pick another state. Go to Coeur d lane (sp?) Idaho.
But seriously, how can you even think of taking your family to San Fran? Bums shite in the street and there are dirty needles everywhere. This is how you take care of your family?

Spoken like someone who’s never been but watches enough Fox News.

San Diego is probably the better option with young kids. San Francisco itself is honestly a little overrated.

Spent the entire day down there for my wife's birthday, saw zero needles, decent bit of bums, one naked laying on a bench, that was a little much; and a whole lot of them smoking weed. No street pooping.

I've been probably 15-20 times and was there a few weeks ago. I'm a huge fan of SF, and think it's one of the most beautiful cities in North America, but even I was surprised by my last visit. The city is looking more dirty and run down, and the homeless situation is astonishing.
ETA-AT&T Park is still the GOAT MLB Park.

Come to San Diego but don't stay downtown, stay in La Jolla, Del Mar, or Carlsbad. Rent a car and you can go up to Disney, Legoland is in Carlsbad, beaches are great, the Zoo is amazing, Seaworld is right there, and the beer is great.

Both are nice. I’ve spent a significant amount of time in SD around Pendleton. It’s a nice town with plenty to do. SD is probably a bit easier on the wallet too

Save the money up for a great vacation in two years that you won't have to spend taking care of a 2 year old.
San Diego: 80 degrees and sunny. Beaches. Bikinis. Gorgeous women smelling faintly of tanning oil everywhere. Tijuana donkey shows if you feel frisky.
San Francisco: 60 degrees and foggy/misty. Rocks. Parkas. Hippies smelling strongly of Patchouli oil everywhere. You can try to hug a redwood.
I think we have a clear winner here.
EDIT: What, two of you don't like Tijuana?
