My wife, mother in law and some of their friends are going to Atlanta to shop. They’re looking for the safest areas to stay and good restaurants in the area. What do yall recommend?

Nowhere…
Serious answer: North Buckhead
My first answer was also serious, though.

As long as they stay in the hotel/shopping/dining districts, during the daytime, they are safe. They will get panhandled a couple times.
Restaurants-
Traditional southern fare - Mary Mac's Tea Room is my favorite in-town restaurant.

I’ve never died up around Dunwoody

Not sure if Vinings is considered part of Atlanta proper, but we used to have a division based out of there and it was nice and seemed very safe.

I've been here my whole life outside of college and I've never died anywhere.
Is there a specific place they want to shop? Are we talking malls or the Americas mart downtown? Or Buckhead?

As a business owner that has to go to America’sMart 3-4 times a year, we stay downtown and then get out of downtown to eat most of the time. Buckhead/Lenox Square area is probably the best option here. High end mall, good food, safe hotels, etc.
Ate at a place called Yeppa in Buckhead in January that was pretty new I think, and really good Italian.
We sometimes eat at a hibachi/sushi place called Nakato, great lobster and steak hibachi. Don’t let the sex club caddy corner to it scare you off. Good food, meh neighborhood.
There’s a fine chocolate shop in Buckhead called Saint Germain with like all kinds of macaroons, chocolates, specialty desserts, etc.
If they want to get out of Buckhead, there’s a little restaurant in Inman Park neighborhood called Amore e Amore. Really fun place. They’ll have the place decorated in a theme of the nearest holiday, then about 7:30-8, they’ll crank the music up and pass out hats and start singing YMCA and shite. Banging cold cuts app, chicken parm, and tiramisu.

That's an excellent area to exercise your second amendment rights.

Last time we traveled to Atl, we stayed near Sandy Springs, and took MARTA from North Springs to Peachtree.
What I would not recommend is where I stayed in 2019, near Five Points and the old Underground Atlanta, which by then had deteriorated into an open air drug market. Never again

I'd recommend the Smyrna/Vinings area. The Battery (where the Braves play) is there too which has alot of stuff as well.
If they are planning to use Marta, then the Dunwoody/Sandy Springs area would be a good choice. Buckhead would be an option too but I don't care for that area anymore.
Another option would be the Alpharetta area like where Avalon is. This is going to be the "safest" choice. However this is pretty far north of the city.

I'm confused. You're from Birmingham, and yet you don't know anything about ATL?
Here's a tip: If it's on the south side of I-20, it certainly sucks.
There isn't a safe place to shop for a bunch of women, because criminals target places like Phipps because they know women are rolling out with hundreds and thousands of dollars of crap when they hit the parking lot. Will you update with the police report after they show back up eventually?

While good general advice, it’s not entirely accurate.
