Recommendations near Barcelona

I just put down a deposit for an Explora Journeys Cruise in Europe next May for our Honeymoon. The cruise departs from Barcelona, Spain. We definitely plan to spend a few days in Barcelona before embarking, but we'd also like to stay in one or two other cities beforehand. Any recommendations? (not limited to cities/towns in Spain)
I know that wherever we stay first will probably need to near a major international airport and we'd like somewhere with fairly easy travel options to Barcelona from the city/town we stay in. We've considered Portugal and Switzerland but haven't made any decisions yet.
Interested in any cities/towns or hidden gems that align with this. Additionally, has anyone been on an Explora Journeys cruise? Thanks in Advance.

Seville is probably one my favorite cities in the world. That wouldn't be a bad option. Easy 6ish hour train ride to Barcelona.

I haven't been, but my son's nanny was from Valencia. Also, don't forget Barca is closer to many cities in France than it is other Spanish cities. Pretty cool to hear a train conductor speak English and French flawlessly, then cross the border (coming from Marseille) and speak flawless English and Spanish.

Really liked Seville and Granada
Seville is exactly what you expect an old Spanish medieval city to look and feel
Granada not as much after the Alhambra but is one of the places remaining with tapas bars where as long as you order a drink, you will get a free tapas. We just tapas bar hopped every night and asked the bar tender at our hotel where she went and she gave us a list and it was cool going to more local spots

You can also fly from Seville to Barcelona on Iberia Air - bout a 90 min flight. As others have commented, you are very close to France and you can travel by train from Barcelona to Aix en Provence in Southern France. As much as I love my adopted hometown of Seville, Spain, Aix is a fairy tale like town.

I got back from a week in Portugal and one in Barcelona last week. I never realized Catalan is closer to French than Spanish.
I’ll second Provence. Spent 8 days with our home base in Saint Remy in 2019 and would go back in a heartbeat. The TGV from Paris to Avignon is only about 2.5 hours. Rent a car at Avignon and drive around from there.
You can get from Avignon to the Barcelona Sants station in about 4 hours by train.
Portugal to Barcelona will require flying. We flew from Porto to Barcelona on Ryan Air for like $80/person. Just shy of 2 hours in the air.

I love train travel, eating food that shouldn't be this good being served from a bar cart, drinking great beer, and looking at the sights, including all the nuke reactors in Southern France that operate flawlessly.
But, Americans don't get that Europe essentially has multiple versions of Frontier/Spirit all over the place for cheap.

Was in Barcelona in February, we took a Viator day trip to Andorra ????, which also has a stop in Louis XIV’s mountain fortress, so technically you go to France as well.
And you are back at your Barcelona hotel in time for dinner.
