We will be in Philadelphia for Memorial Day weekend and plan to hit the historical sites, a Phillies game and partake in the local sammiches. We are staying in the City Center area near the subway. We are a couple blocks from the Independence Hall area.

Any recommendations for steak sandwiches? other restaurants in the area? Other than Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, & Christ Church what else would interest a couple teenagers? Is the Museum of the American Revolution worth it? Penns Landing? Reading Market? Mutter Museum?

Any advice on the subway is also appreciated. I understand there day pass for multi rides? How do you do that from PHL? Is that something I need to purchase ahead of time?

Edit: local beer recs welcomed.....and NEEDED!

You can take the train from the airport to the city. I'm pretty sure you can buy a pass from a kiosk at the airport train station. I've never bought a pass ahead of time.

I would recommend Reading Market, Frankilin Institute (if you have kids), Mutter Museum for sure.

For cheesesteaks go to Jim's. Skip Pats or Genos.

Where is Jims? Is Pats and Genos the "dueling steak shops" across the street from each other?

Whats the story with the crab fries at Citizens park? Sounds like crap?

Jims is in west Philly.

Yeah, Pats and Genos are across from each other.

Not sure, haven't been to a Phillies game yet. I think they just sprinkle crab seasoning on some fries. I usually grab a bag of Herrs Old Bay chips when I stop at a WaWa and they're good.

Oh, go to a WaWa. I know it sounds crazy to suggest stopping at a convenience store but it's worth it.

I’ve been to pats and Genos, and neither is anything special. To be honest, for a nationally known city staple, a Philadelphia cheesesteak is kind of disappointing, and nowhere nearly as good as something like Chicago pizza.

I like pat's and geno's so i wouldnt say you should skip them especially if you're a first timer.

Those crab fries from chickie and petes are awesome. Dinic's roasted pork sandwhich in reading terminal is also very good. If youre out and about between liberty bell and museums, don't be afraid to get a hoagie from wawa. They're cheap, good and fast if you're on the go

Sarcone's too. And maybe George's.

The bread. Outside of New Orleans, there is no place in the South that packs the sandwich punch of those three.

4th and South Street. South street is cool. Ishkabibles...across the street from Jim's is not bad.

Fries over priced and seasoned with Ol Bay seasoning. Its a rip off...stay away.

Before the Phillies game...head to Xfinity Live to pregame. Its near the stadium and is the home of the Dr. J statue. Located where the old Spectrum was located.

You also might want to consider a trip to Valley Forge if you have the time.

Go to Pats and split a sandwich and then cross the street and split one at Gino’s. The guy from Pats came out and yelled at us “don’t go over there, they suck” as we crossed the street. It was pretty funny.

I am not a huge visitor of historical spots but really was awed by Independence Hall. To think that a group of guys got together in that room and decided to revolt against the Crown is pretty cool. Go there and soak that in.

Jim’s hands down.

The Eastern State Penitentiary tour was great.

Mutter museum.

We also liked Buddakan

Get a roast pork sandwich either at DiNic’s (Reading Terminal Market) or at Tony Luke’s. Both put Pat and Geno’s cheesesteaks to shame.

Went to the natural history museum; I think the actual name is The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. They have stuff such as this but teenagers may be too old for dinosaurs. Look at Logan Square on Google Earth to see what all is nearby.

These are bugs and butterflies. They had a butterfly room. When we were there 4 years ago they had a special exhibit about The Birds of Paradise which was very interesting. I'm sure it is gone now but they probably have a different special exhibit.

This museum is near the Rodin Museum and not too far from Eastern State Penitentiary. I noticed there is a City Tap House nearby also, have no idea if it is any good.

We got sandwiches at Tony Luke's on Oregon Avenue but I think they have numerous locations around Philly. It was good, big sandwich for the $ as I recall.

So I am just wondering if I hit a bad day.

I did 4 hours in Philly while visiting New York on this past Tuesday. Took the train in and did Independence Hall, Liberty Bell etc....

Then we walked over to Jim's at 4th and south and basically opened the place.

Again, not sure if we just caught a bad batch but the meat had no seasoning or flavor. Bread was great but the meat was a touch mushy and flavorless.

Now I am far from an expert on the subject so I may be a jackass that just missed something... but I didn't get it.

FYI: I personally tried one with whiz and one with provolone. Wife added peppers which made a world of difference.

I'm really not a big fan of Jim's, I'd stick with Pats or Genos if I'm in the area just because they have, as you mentioned, flavor.

First of all the subway doesn't get you anywhere you really need to go except the Phillies game. You can take a train from the airport to center city. Most of the activities you list are walking distance from where you're staying. If you're here for basically 3 days, hit the sights in the city that seem interesting to you outside of the obligatory bell, hall, and BF's house. There are plenty of museums in the city, all within walking distance but each would really take 3-5 hours to get the full value so on a short weekend, pick one or two of interest. For a cheesesteak, hit somewhere on South Street. Is it "the best"? That's all a matter of opinion but it will be close. Plus, do you really want to spend 2+ hours and 2 Ubers going to Pat's/Geno's? Your call.

Just did Philly for a day last weekend.

Independence hall
Liberty bell
Natural Science Drexel

All were good

If your in old city and want a cheesesteak, Sonny’s was solid. Not sure if it’s famous or a big name but it was solid sandwich and close.
I wanted to hit franklin fountain, it’s a creamery, but didn’t get around to it. Has good ratings online and is close.

At reading terminal I did a roast pork at Dinics. It’s a solid sandwich, but no clue how it was voted best sandwich in the country by travel channel. It’s not that good. There is also a solid fried chicken place near Dinics. Can’t remember the name, but it was good. Whoopie pies at flying monkey were solid.
