Was thinking about going with my ole lady on this from LA to SF, but it looks like part of the highway is closed due a landslide.

If you pick out a couple of points along the highway on Google Maps ( LINK), it looks like it's blocked off for a good part of it. A few articles are suggesting the bridge re-opens in September. Should we wait until next year, or is it still worth going?

We went last year when it was closed right outside Big Sur and thought it was still worth it. We drove from Carmel to Big Sur Roadhouse for lunch.

Are the closures the same as last year though? Even though I live in Los Angeles, there’s fires and mud slides every year so it’s tough to keep track of exactly what’s going on up north.

About a month ago I looked into a road trip up to SF on the same route, and based on the closures, it was an easy pass for me. That said, I wanted to hit multiple cities along PCH. If you’re just looking to visit big sur, maybe it’s still worth it.

I don't think they are the same, I believe the bridge that washed out was supposed to open back up in September of last year. I could be wrong though.

I’ll be out there in a couple of weeks and was trying to figure out how if getting to Big Sur was worth it before turning around and driving to Napa. Perhaps I’ll postpone it until my next trip

Looks like it's still closed.

quote:

[IN THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA AREA] IS CLOSED FROM 4.6 MI NORTH OF RAGGED POINT TO 10.3 MI NORTH OF RAGGED POINT /AT MUD CREEK/ (MONTEREY CO) 24 HRS A DAY 7 DAYS A WEEK THRU 9/30/18 - DUE TO MUDSLIDE REMOVAL - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

LINK

2 years ago I made the trek on it from SLO all the way up to Monterey--incredibly beautiful drive but damn if it wasn't the most mind draining stretches I've ever driven. Average speed of 30 mph (120 miles over 4 hours) around hairpin turns the whole way = mental exhaustion.

It is incredibly beautiful. We went early in the morning to avoid crowds, but I know what you mean about the drive. The 17 mile drive in Monterey is also beautiful.

Can you clarify? Could you have gone to San Simeon from there?

Some of it is gone. I drove last summer from SF to Santa Cruz. I like that stretch quite a bit.

I was out that way in December. We drove down to Big Sur and then turned around. Also we thought about cutting through inland to keep going south at one point, but we were told that the road is very dangerous and goes down to one lane in a lot of spots. I saw all I needed to see from Monterrey to Big Sur and back.

I'll be making the drive in Aug. from the Olympic Peninsula to San Luis Obispo. According to Pacific-Coast-Highway-Travel.com: "The One Closed Section of Highway 1 is Scheduled to Reopen by the End of July 2018".
Good news.
