One or two weeks in Anchorage and Juneau.

My family of four is looking to vacation in Alaska next summer and we would like to hit Anchorage and Juno. We will spend two or three days in each city. Any must do’s or dont’s?
We have been to Juneau and know our way around fairly well but we’ve only been in the winter time when the tourist industry is kind of slow. We have never been to Anchorage and are completely open to any ideas for unique experiences. Keep in mind our children are seven and nine years old and small simple hikes are OK but nothing crazy as far as physical exertion is concerned.
I would like to incorporate at least one train ride, some whale watching, and a couple of good dining experiences. Also, any trips to see glaciers or mountain views are welcome.
In Juneau Alaska we will go back to the Mendenhall glacier and spend a couple of days running around to various downtown and out of town attractions such as Saint Theresas Cathedral.

There is no reason to spend much time in Anchorage. There is not much to do in the city itself to occupy you for more than a day or so. From there you can catch the train to the Denali Park.
For whale watching we enjoyed the one from Juneau that circles Shelter Island. Beautiful scenery and we saw lots of whales.
Another beautiful boat ride is the tour of Kenai Fiord from Seward which we took before going to Anchorage.

100% correct on Anchorage. No reason to spend three days there. Plenty of reason's to not.

Will be there soon for a day or so before jumping off to somewhere else. Any bars / restaurants in that town worth checking out?

There's nothing in Anchorage worth mentioning. Take the Denali Star to Fairbanks and book some excursions. You can fly back to Juneau.

The 49th State Brewery in Anchorage - https://www.49statebrewing.com/ - has a grilled cheese sandwich with King Crab on it that is to die for, but like the other folks have said, Anchorage is not worth spending much time there, the countryside / surrounding areas are so much better.

I wouldn't spend any time in anchorage unless you just wanted to leave from there to do other things.
Boat tours our of Seward. Denali flight out of Talkeetna. Manatuska Glacier Hike out of Glacier View. We're some of our favorite things we did.
Bear flight out anchorage or Homer might be something to consider.
Seward and Talkeetna were our favorite towns. Heard palmer is nice, but we didn't spend time there.

Honestly, none that I can think of. On our 3 week trip a couple of years back we spent two nights there. The night we flew in and the night before we flew out. On the night we flew in there was a shooting across the street from the hotel we were staying at near the airport. We did eat breakfast at Judy's Cafe, a local joint that was pretty good. Sorry, that's all I got. Our trip was great. Anchorage? Not so much.

Highly recommend Kenai Fiord boat tour.

Juneau
Go to Glacier Bay or Tracy Arm, and Skagway. In town, if you're into hiking there's a hundred or so good trails.
Whale watching and bear viewing is pretty popular here too. The fireweed blooms in July, Salmon runs start mid July.

Saint Theresas Cathedral.
From St Therese to the end of the road is pretty spectacular in summer. You can watch WHales and sea lions from shore in some spots. Eatle Beach is my favorite rec spot. You can hike to the Eagle and Herbert Glaciers from there.
St Therese is pretty spectacular at sunset. There's a couple of friendly marmots who love to play on the rock causeway leading to the Shrine.

Family was in Juneau last week on a cruise ( trashy I know). I highly recommend Harv & Marv for whale watching. They were top notch and very well priced. Also the dog sledding there is cool aside from everything else you mentioned.

Good outfit, smaller boats. Some of their interpreters are top notch.

49th Street or Glacier Brewhouse. I usually try to stop by F Street Bar if I’m staying downtown.

Avoid 4th street Anchorage. Avoid the Bus Terminal area.
4th St is a shite show.

Anyone have a good 7-9 day itinerary for Alaska?

Fly into anchorage. Rent car. Book air bnbs all around Kenai peninsula (avoid being in town when cruise ship is in port if you can). We did this last year in August and it was an amazing trip.
Lots of restaurants tried.
Bear flight.
Salmon fishing.
Hike to salmon jumping in the river.
Homer ferry to Seldovia
Bay cruise to see wildlife out of Seward.
Hilarious sidenote- we took this trip with a couple we met on the OT

Lol. I love 4th street. They’ve made an effort to try and improve it so I like to support the shops. I prefer the downtown area though (as I do most cities).
