Great people of the TD Travel Board, I am soliciting your help for a trip idea I have for two couples to go up to the New England area, flying into and out of Boston, for about 5 nights/4 days, in the first week of October.

I am curious if anyone has experience with any of the cities and towns within the area - the big draw will be the fall foliage and scenery. We plan to spend a couple of nights in Boston and have a good handle on that, but don't know the surrounding areas all that well. Should we do Vermont? Maine?

Ideal scenario is a cool scenic train in the area, like the types you see in Colorado where the ticket is more about the scenery than the actual transportation. Open to whatever cool towns are out there based on responses in this thread.

There are about 10,000 New England threads between the Food & Drink and Travel boards. Would just use Search and navigate any threads about Vermont, Maine, etc.

ETA: Someone asked about Maine and Vermont two weeks ago, for example. Here is the thread: https://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/travel/vermont-and-maine-summer-6-night-tour--itinerary-suggestions-needed/108776624/

My bro, looks like the thread you linked is Summer specific. But what is this board for but not to have a dialogue? I will supplement with independent research but would like to engage with the great people of the TB

October is going to be towards the tail end of foliage season, just a heads up. I don’t expect you’d miss it entirely but it will be past peak.

I’ve never done a train foliage tour, but if you rent a car then I would recommend going to Woodstock, VT for a quaint New England town feel in the mountains with good food and beer. If you are willing to travel further north, Stowe is also a great option.

He's not wrong, there are plenty of New England Fall threads. But I'll throw you a bone.

This is the train you are looking for...

Thanks RonFNSwanson. With Boston taking up 2 of the 5 nights, do you think it would be ok to do Burlington and Portland the balance of the trip or too aggressive?

I know this question wasn’t directed to me, but IMO that’s too aggressive. Burlington and Portland aren’t very close to one another and you’d be spending a lot of your limited three days in the car.

That's what I am gathering. I think I'm now deciding between 1. doing Boston and stuff like the Concord train + Maine (portland) or 2. doing Boston and then head to Vermont hitting towns like you mentioned.

I'm flying into Boston this Monday, renting a car and going to Portland for 2 nights (staying AirBnb on the East End), then to Southwest Harbor (Acadia NP) for 3 nights and then back to Boston (NorthEnd)for 2 nights.

I've been to Boston before so the coast of Maine and the ANP is the primary purpose of this trip. I let you know what I find out!!

Also any recommendation for fine dining on the Northend of Boston would be appreciated.

Yo! Did this trip last year with two kids (14 and 10) and it was fantastic.

Flew in/out Boston and wanted to check off some states.

We rented a car and headed to Rhode Island. Spent the night there, saw some sights, and headed to Portland,ME.

Stopped at Plymouth and Salem,MA along the way. Plymouth is a great little coastal town. Walked around, lunch, ice cream, and saw tRock. Very cool. Salem was lackluster. You can see the memorial of the witch trials and walk a grave yard but that’s about it. I’d pass.

Portland was great. Cool town and good eats. We went loberstering and the kids absolutely loved it.

Headed to the White Mountains in NH. Very pretty and did some light hiking. Saw a moose which is always a treat.

Went to Ben and Jerry’s in VT. No factory tour which was a bummer. Left and went to Burlington. Didn’t see much interesting there. Did get to see Lake Champlain, but that was about it. No desire to go back.

Made the trek back to Boston. Now my favorite big city. Very walkable and people were friendly. Highly recommend the hop on/hop off bus tour great history it makes it easy to get around when you don’t feel like walking. USS Constitution was cool, food in the North End is great, and of course, you have to see Fenway. Lots of other stuff as well.

Happy to share more details if you like.

If your main purpose is leaves, I'd spend less time in Boston. Unless you've never been there before.

Don’t rule out Martha’s Vineyard for that short length of time.

We did this trip a while ago and it was one the best we’ve ever gone on. Fly into and out of Boston.

1. Did a day and half in Boston hitting the highlights. Duckboat tour, the gardens, and freedom trail.
2. Left Boston and went to Salem for the day. Interesting place but lots of touristy things. Red’s is a great sandwich place. Returned to Boston that night.
3. Next day drive up to Bar Harbor, Maine. We stopped at Portland and got lunch and did lighthouse tour. The tour was nice and quick way to see Portland coast.
4. Spent two days in Bar Harbor. Acadia National Park and Cadillac Mountain are must sees. We went whale watching here. Bad idea something about certain fish that whale eat not being protected, saw nothing. Cape Cod is the place to go Whale Watching. Jordan’s restaurant is a must for breakfast in town.
5. Drove from Bar Harbor to New Hampshire to go on the Mount Washington Cog Railrod. Railroad is a great way to go up Mount Washington, get tickets in advance. There is also a raid to just drive to the top. Not much exciting to do in Conway where we stayed. Stayed here just one day.
6. Drove from Conway to Providence, RI. Lots of places to eat and drink in Providence. A few really nice parks on the coast to watching sailing. There is a famous Cliff Walk that goes along the shore and behind mansions. Stayed here just one day.
7. Drove from RI to Cape Cod. Stayed in Hyannis. We went to Martha’s Vineyard but most everything on the island closes after summer. It was nice to see it but not much to do there. Last day we drove
to Plymouth. They have the rock the Pilgrims landed on, a replica of the mayflower, and Plymouth plantation. If you like history even a little this is worth the stop.
8. Drove back to Boston the last day and flew out.

It’s a lot of driving but beautiful. You should be aiming for 1st week of October to see color. I would also recommend avoiding the interstate as much as possible. Opportunity to pass through lots of old New England towns. It is a great trip, one you won’t forget.

Wouldn’t necessarily say colors will be past peak. Have been to New England handful of times through the middle towards the end of the month. Colors still pop.
Each year is different. All truly depends on summer rainfall and how long the summer temps hang around up there.

Sorta close to New England is Cooperstown. If you like baseball, it’s a great visit.
