Was just forwarded this from a Park Ranger buddy

"Consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s May 13 announcement regarding updated Interim Public Health Recommendations for Fully Vaccinated People, fully vaccinated federal employees, fully vaccinated onsite contractors, and fully vaccinated visitors to federal buildings and federal lands are no longer required to wear masks.

For now, this change related to masking is the only change to federal workplace COVID-19 safety guidance – maximum telework and workplace occupancy limits remain in place – but we will continue to update based on public health guidance.

To clarify what this announcement means for individuals:

If you are fully vaccinated (at least 2 weeks past your final dose), you are no longer required to wear a mask.
If you are not fully vaccinated (less than 2 weeks past your final dose), please continue to wear a mask consistent with the requirements set forth in the DOI Workplace Safety Plan."

If I see people in masks while hiking, I know I don’t want to approach them in any event

I would love to be a fly on the wall in some of the offices right now while they are scrambling to figure this out. He sent this to me because I asked him yesterday how the CDC guidance was going to effect their mask mandate. He said he figured there would be an update but not to expect anything for several weeks. It doesn't sounds like they were expecting this so soon.

I always have a gaiter on. Use as a headband when sweaty, to keep sun off my neck when above the treeline, to keep my cap from blowing off when I am in the boat, etc. I plan on pulling it over my face when I approach hikers this year just to mess with them.

We're hitting 5 national parks in a couple weeks. Not planning on wearing a mask.

In my experience, it was never enforced. Visited 3 national parks in 3 different states the last 8 months and no one ever said anything

Rockies
GC
Everglades

ETA. Actually, I lied. Grand Canyon was right before it all blew up with mandates.

It's hilarious how many people I saw wearing one while hiking last year. My favorite would be the ones that would see you coming down a trail and fumble to get their mask on real quick. It's just weird.

yes it is weird
as the other guy said above I usually hike with a gaiter anyway for sun and sweat reasons so if I absolutely have to I’ll just pull it up

Hopefully this stupidity of masks outside ends soon. I know it has for me

They got rid of the masking in our office, but we still have building capacity limits for some reason even though like all but one of our staff our vaccinated

Yeah the email I was forwarded said telework and limited capacity guidelines were still in effect. My “educated guess” is that since the EO was based directly off CDC guidance the attorneys told them they could no longer take legal action against people not wearing mask and could be held liable if they tried. I noticed the NPS social media still hasn’t updated anything.

My husband has kidney issues and is on large doses of immunosuppressant drugs. If he gets an illness from someone, he is at great risk. We would be the ones fumbling to get a mask on when encountering people. So there is some perspective on the weird part for you.

Also, in certain areas out west, if the wind is blowing, you can contract valley fever or hantavirus. We will be masking up.

I highly doubt anyone asks or checks a thing.

But I have my LA Wallet app with my drivers license and vax info in digital format. The state dept of health already has your vax info; you just add it to the app with 2 taps. Shows your date of being fully vaxxed.

I got it solely to show people and tell them it's my state-issued vaccine passport. It's fun to watch their reactions.

Headed out to Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon two weeks from this Friday. This is good news. My kids will be with us, ages 5 & 9, wonder if the crazy quacks out there will expect the kids to wear masks since they obviously aren't vaccinated.
