Planning a trip to Montana over Labor Day, 7-8 nights.
Renting a truck/jeep and traveling Western Montana. Looking at flying into Bozeman but have not booked flights. Glacier, YellowStone, Lewis and Clark Caverns are all on the list but trying to plan the cool cities/towns to visit and stay as well as other activities along the way. Fishing will be part of the agenda as well if anyone has any area's to grab a guide.
Cheapest city to fly into would be welcome as well.

Bozeman, Helana or Billings will likely be the cheapest. I've flown into Helana and Bozeman, not sure about Billings. Check Google Flights and Kayak to see which is cheapest. Only ever gone for the National Parks, the cities/towns are your typical western towns. Haven't done more than pick up a car at the airport and maybe staying the last night before fly out.

Kalispell and Great Falls are going to be the closest airports to Glacier.

?
These are probably the two most expensive Airports. I am planning on Bozeman at the moment.

Bozeman is your best bet most likely. Nothing is cheap to fly into that area, the next is Boise I believe.

Gardiner is a cool town. The week of Labor Day will be the last busy week of the year for Yellowstone so expect big crowds during the weekend that die off through the week. If you haven’t made hotel reservations for Labor Day weekend you better ASAP!

Also you may consider getting extra rental car insurance, I didn’t, but since so much of the roads are gravel they a very high percentage of cracked windshields.

If you fly into Bozeman, you are going to have a hard time hitting Glacier and Yellowstone. I'd stay around big sky country and west Yellowstone. There is plenty to keep you occupied.

check in Livingston--there may be the rodeo that weekend. Eat at the Chop House.

Stay at Buck's T4 Lodge, hit Hebgen Lake, drive around Yellowstone. fish all around. hit Ennis--they have a little Whiskey distillery there. find some secluded lakes and camp out. rent a forest service cabin.

That’s a lot of coverage for just 7-8 nights. You may want to focus on one side or the other and enjoy it rather rush to see the entire state in a week.

For reference, West Glacier to Gardiner is nearly 400 miles one way. And that’s not even seeing the actual parks. St. Mary to Gardiner is still 375 miles and that’s the closer side of Glacier to Yellowstone.

I was thinking Livingston, West Yellowstone, Bozeman than drive to the canyon ferry area and exploring Helena, Deer Creek and Anaconda. Any other cool towns along that route?

The answer of cost truly depends. My only point was to not limit your search to bozeman, or look at an open jaw ticket. so you can move in one direction from start to finish.

You have top suggestions for where you would go? Love to find some foodie towns not to far from parks and fishing to stay in. Not necessarily going to do the stay out in the middle of nowhere/cabin life. Even considering renting a sprinter/van and staying in it if I can find the right price.

Go to Philipsburg and check out the brewery. It’s relatively close to Virginia City, Lewis and Clark Caverns, Missoula etc. and not far from Quake Lake and West Yellowstone.

Thinking about staying in Bozeman for 3 nights and Phillipsburg for 3 nights. Going to hit West Yellowstone, Livingston, the park (2 days) from Bozeman and Mizuoula, Helena, Anaconda and surrounding towns, Gates of the mountains and Lewis and Clark Caverns from Phillipsburg.
Doable? I see quite a few breweries around, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I’m flying to Glacier over Labor Day week too. We go there once a year since I have family in Kalispell/Whitefish. We ALWAYS fly through Kalispell (FCA). Flights are not expensive

If so it’s cuz you’re flying thru Baton Rouge. We fly through Nola and it’s usually $400 RT

shite no! I don’t know about Philipsburg but your Bozeman plans are brutal. The park is every bit of a hour and half to the north entrance from Bozeman. All that does is get you to the entrance, you’ve a got a lot more driving from there. You’re looking at all day in a car with this plan to only see a quick overview of the park. What is in Livingston and West Yellowstone that you wanna see?

Why would you go to Montana and not go to Glacier?

I wouldn’t be worried about breweries if you wanna keep this plan I’d be looking to score some meth.

If I were you I’d either spend my time in between Bozeman and Jackson with most of my time in the parks or I’d go to Missoula for a day then get up to Glacier. Either one not both. 209 from Missoula to Glacier area is much prettier than 93.

Billings is usually the cheapest airport to fly through... and you can easily go from there through Red Lodge to Yellowstone, then into the Bozeman area and further west.

It's not convenient to Glacier, but neither is Bozeman.
