Memphis Suburbs

My brother-in-law and sister-in-law (no pics) are visiting from Australia in the spring. This is their first visit to the United States. They are huge Elvis fans and want to visit Graceland and Sun Studios. What are some of the safer suburbs of Memphis we can stay at? I’d be willing to drive up to an hour from Graceland.

East Memphis/Germantown area by the 240 isn’t terrible, I lived there for 7 years and avoided being a crime victim.
Yeah don’t stay anywhere near Graceland, that is ghetto.

Agree with cgrand. Downtown has plenty of nice hotels that are safe. Germantown is very nice and safe but I don’t think you need to stay all the way in Germantown.

I agree with staying downtown. You’ll be fine if you have any sense at all.
You’ll be more uncomfortable stopped at a red light near Graceland than walking around most of downtown.

Downtown you have Westin, Peabody Canopy and Memphian as options. I prefer The Peabody because it has better food options within the hotel and consistent valet parking. Westin can be a mess if there is a concert or sporting event at FedEx forum. I have also stayed at the Central Station in Midtown but parking is not ideal its a huge wide lot not well lit after dark but has security that is hanging around. I travel to Memphis for work at least once a month and stay either downtown at hotels listed or out in Collierville/Germantown at very specific hotels because there is crime I would give similar advice to anyone staying in NOLA.

Stay downtown, and if you don't feel comfortable walking take an uber directly to where you want go.
Thats what we did and ended up walking around just fine.

A lot of people have that same experience. Memphis has its problems, no doubt. The important shite downtown is fairly concentrated and safe.
Get a map and draw a square with Riverside Dr, Madison Ave, AutoZone Park down to the Forum, and MLK Ave being the borders and you have everything you need for a couple nights. You can walk within those borders. Uber or drive everywhere else.
You have one of the most historic hotels in the South and within half a mile you have Triple A baseball, Grizzlies, Orpheum, Beale, and elite restaurants.

You realize people live in Memphis and even in the mid town area every day. I know to some it’s strange to live in a city but it’s a real thing. And if they’re that big of Elvis fans you should just head to Tupelo

Germantown, I live here. Safest city in Tennessee I believe.
