Lynchburg couple flies to Hawaii, finds out negative COVID-19 results won't be accepted

Ruth Garretson and her husband were expecting a relaxing anniversary trip to Hawaii. Garretson says it was smooth sailing until they reached Maui.
When they arrived, Garretson says they were informed their CDC-approved, negative COVID tests they got through MedExpress weren't going to cut it. She says they were told their tests had to be through Walgreens or CVS but Garretson says none of that ever came to light in their pre-trip research.
"Yes, they gave you a lot of different places you could test but it didn't make it sound like the place you tested was as important as the type of test," she said.

She says the airport gave them three options:
Go home
Go back to LAX and get a rapid test
Quarantine for 10 days.
The Garretson's opted for LAX and the rapid test, she says by doing that they lost a whole vacation day and over $1,200.
"Every single thing that happened from that moment until we got back to Maui was as if they were just after money," she said.
She cautions everyone traveling that the best thing to do, is to get advice from someone that's traveled recently.

The Department of Transportation for Hawaii provided the following statement:
The Hawaii Safe Travels team continually works to make Hawaii’s travel requirements during this ongoing pandemic clear through our messaging and on the website HawaiiCovid19.com. It is highly recommended that travelers research and understand the rules in place for the location they plan to visit. HawaiiCovid19.com is clearly and frequently highlighted on all State of Hawaii websites as well as many travel sites.

Safe Travels Hawai‘i Overview
Aloha! The State of Hawai‘i Safe Travels Hawai‘i program is designed to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community from trans-Pacific passengers arriving at airports/ports across the Islands.
The program includes the required State of Hawai‘i Travel and Health Form, temperature screening at all Hawai‘i airports upon arrival, a vaccination exception program, and a pre-travel testing option to bypass the mandatory quarantine.
Travelers not participating in Safe Travels MUST quarantine for 10 days or the length of their stay, whichever is shorter.
It is important travelers consider the duration and considerable expense of possible quarantine before embarking.
Beginning June 15, 2021, individuals fully vaccinated in the State of Hawai‘i may enter the state without pre-travel testing/quarantine starting the 15th day after the completion of their vaccination. The vaccination record document must be uploaded onto Safe Travels and printed out prior to departure and the traveler must have a hard copy in hand when arriving in Hawai?i.
Read more about how your COVID-19 vaccination can help you travel between counties in Hawai‘i: HawaiiCOVID19.com/travel/faqs.
The pre-travel testing program remains available for all travelers NOT vaccinated in Hawai‘i.
All travelers, including those from Japan, Canada, Korea and Taiwan, and any domestic travelers not vaccinated in Hawai?i, who board a plane on the final leg of their trip to the Hawaiian Islands without first securing a negative test within 72 hours before departure will be subject to mandatory quarantine.
The state of Hawai‘i will ONLY accept Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) from a certified Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) lab test results from TRUSTED TESTING AND TRAVEL PARTNERS. Travelers will not be able to obtain a Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) upon arrival at any Hawai?i airport

Then they did a poor job in their research. My BIL and SIL are in Hawaii right now on their honeymoon and we were with them in PR right before they left for Hawaii. They were well aware of the approved list of places to get a test and had no issues getting through.

Seems like they should have done some better research. It also seems like though that airports in Hawaii would offer rapid tests in case of this kind of situation.

Yeah they have a list of places to get the test at, many seem to be aimed at West Coast travelers but CVS/WalGreens are both on it.
Not sure the reasoning for not allowing a negative test from elsewhere count, I could go to a private clinic and get my test but it would not be accepted.
Hawaii has their own rules going right now

They could make some money, 150 for a quick rapid test

Hawaii can end up underwater for all I care. Forced succession would be awesome.

Yes their rules, and their loss. They are driving many tourists away. We were supposed to go this month but chose cozumel instead for several reasons, cost being tops.

It's literally the first result for "COVID test Hawaii," so it's ultimately on them. But yes any restrictions anywhere at this point are ridiculous, including the one to return from international travel for vaccinated US citizens.

am i reading/understanding this right? i could be fully vaccinated, but if i was not vaccinated IN HAWAII i still need to follow the testing/quarantine protocol?
not planning a trip to hawaii anytime soon, but this doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

The current Hawaii restrictions are totally ludicrous, but the rules are printed everywhere. They are easy to find.

Tourism income be damned.
If states could opt into Socialism, Hawaii would be first (and they'd immediately close their state to all travel).

Yeah it sucked coming from rural Alabama and finding a pre approved testing site, but the warnings were everywhere that you had to.

Yes, this is going to change once Hawaii reaches 60% fully vaccinated for all residents. They are currently at 55%.
It is totally insane.

Hawaii is the one state I have not visited yet.
I was supposed to go last summer, but obviously COVID made that not happen.
frick Hawaii. As long as they participate in this bullshite charade, I will not be traveling there to check off state #50 from my list and give them the tourist dollars they desperately need.

I've been to Hawaii 3 times. I don't plan on ever going back. The Caribbean is a lot closer, and a lot cheaper.

They are going to keep their crazy restrictions in place until Hawaii reaches 60% vaccinations. Then they will allow restaurants to go from 50% to 75% capacity, and POSSIBLY allow vaccinated American Citizens to come to Hawaii without a test.
At 70% vaccination, they will get rid of all restrictions.
Keep in mind, that unlike other States, Hawaii is using TOTAL POPULATION in its number...meaning even people who can't even get vaccinated (12 and under) are included. So they really need a much higher number of those eligible to be vaccinated.
They are freaking nuts.

People need to take responsibility for their ignorance, they didn't read the restrictions. I don't feel bad for them.

Just don’t go there until they drop the requirement. Stupid they are still doing this.
