We are looking to book a Rocky Mountain destination next April that would be fun for and with a 2 yr old. I was told to look into a "dude ranch" but am not familiar at all with that type of vacation. Has anyone taken a young child on a mountain vacation that was not skiing, and if so, where did you go?

Look into Estes Park Colorado. The YMCA resort has a ton of activities for kids and you are pretty close to Denver and Boulder.

My advice would be to just rent a cabin in the mountains (anywhere really) and enjoy your stay.

Maybe invest in a hiking carrier if you are interested, but otherwise, a 2 year old can be entertained with pretty much anything.

I guess my point is, I'd go where y'all want to go and not worry so much about the kid since he/she is young enough to where it doesn't really matter.

You will be on his schedule anyways with naps and bedtime, so you will be limited.

April will still have a lot of snow if you are trying to avoid skiing and the cold.

I just did this with a 2 year old. We stayed a couple nights at YMCA of the Rockies, and 3 nights in downtown Estes Park. We enjoyed the town more than YMCA, but there were alot of Covid restrictions in place at the YMCA.

Highly recommend a good kid carrying backpack to carry your child on hikes. Osprey, Deuter, Kelty, etc. Maybe you can find a lightly used one.

I think any vacation with their family is awesome for a 2 yr old. I wouldn't overthink it too much.

We just took our 3 year old to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone and he loved it. He got to run free outside, kayaked, swam, saw some bears, bisons, dear, fox, etc. and eat a ton of smores and snacks.

Are you looking for Winter with Snow or summer activity OP? You absolutely do not want to go to something like a Dude Ranch in April for summer time activities, there's a good chance in most of the west there will be Snow.

Late April can be an affordable time to go somewhere with snow though, as after spring break rates generally drop off quite a bit.

Isn't there a lot of mud during that time of year due to snow melt?

Wyoming, Montana, and Utah get snow well into June at altitude. You definitely don’t want to go to even Colorado in April, I think April actually has the most snow for Colorado it’s just it gets warm and melts on and off so rarely gets thick like the winter.

I normally wait until April to ski for better rates. I've never heard of there being a lack of snow in April.

There is Colorado skiing until July 4 at Arapahoe Basin.

Go anywhere you want. The two year old will have fun regardless.

My son is 1.5.

I don't expect him to really care where we are, but I do plan for him to be a toddler, so I don't schedule adventure travel or Oktoberfest with him. Or otherwise 20 things in a day. That isn't happening.

I think the nature trips are good. You're not really missing much if they are being terrible, and can set off at whatever time whenever it's daylight and they are good to go.

Being 2 doesn’t give them any input......there’ll be plenty of time for that. Go have fun. Safe travels.

I took my daughter to the Grand Canyon when she was about 6 and she doesn't every remember going there. She saw a pic and said where is that?.

You’re not alone.
Friends of ours went to the GC and were standing next to another family (they didn’t know them) and a boy 6-8 who was not impressed says something like “Is this it?” or “We came here for this?”- I don’t recall exactly what he said. That’s my friend’s inside joke now; whenever they go somewhere that doesn’t meet the expectations - they mutter that phrase, give each other a look, laugh, and remember the unimpressed kid at the GC.
