Is it bad enough to hinder your trip? Will i be stepping over human shite every time i walk somewhere?

It exists, but it’s greatly exaggerated on this website.

I was out there for 2 weeks this summer and it didn't bother me. The only time I smelled or saw feces was walking down Market from the ferry building but I spent most of my time in the Haight, Mission, Noe Valley, North Beach away from downtown. You will see homeless but it's no big deal if you aren't overly sensitive

It’s bad in certain places, wouldn’t let that hinder a good vacation

It's pretty bad but I would go back. No issues around Giants stadium, waterfront or other popular tourist areas. Our only issues were right outside our hotel on Market (Four Seasons) and surrounding stores - CVS, McDonalds, etc. Aggressive homeless everywhere down there. CVS had security out front due to the tweekers running in and stealing stuff and McDonalds were feeding homeless which created a seagull type situation. An employee would put a hamburger on the sidewalk and people would rush and fight to get it. It was sad. Drunk and drugged homeless yelling and walking around with no pants while cops handed out tickets to businessmen who ran stop signs on their bikes. Craziest stuff I've ever seen. Literally had a guy dog cussing everyone that walked by him while his pants were around his ankles. Police were giving two guys in suits tickets on their bicycles for running stop sign. After writing tickets cops drove off. Crazed homeless guy kept cussing and spitting.

It’s pretty bad in Tenderloin and Haight (though Haight is a super cool, weird, fun neighborhood). It honestly didn’t impact my trip any, didn’t even stop to think about it. San Fran is easily one of the best cities in America to visit.

They pay sanitation workers like 100k a year to pick up the shite. They still can't afford to live in the city.

This is my biggest issue with San Francisco. Their mentally ill homeless are on another level. Much more violent and confrontational than the homeless I've encountered in other cities. I won't say I won't go back because of it (I've been a few times), but I've never left there thinking what a great place it is.

You should still go. Palmetto08's comment doesn't surprise me from my experiences there. But, I have to say, I was in SF a week last year and don't recall seeing the police at all--outside of parked at the courthouse and a closed road (which was inhabited by a homeless camp).

I've gone twice in the past year and while it's bad, it's not as bad as the media portrays it. There are some areas that are horrible, but it shouldn't be a deciding factor on your travel plans. I found the homeless problem the worst in the areas where they had the subway tunnel entrances. As a previous poster mentioned, Oakland as a whole city is a shithole and I would avoid crossing that bridge at all cost.

The Bay area as a whole is cool; I really don't care for SF proper.

The homeless problem is pretty bad. I'm a fiscally conservative and socially liberal person, so I tend to roll my eyes when Baws think that any city with diversity or even a hint of poverty is the slums. However, SF does have a legit problem. I have done a lot of work out there, and my car has been broken into several times. It is what it is.

If you're heading to the Bay area, shoot over to wine country, or, head down to Carmel, Big Sur, etc... It's beautiful.

I didn't notice it as a problem in the Haight. The touristy areas are going to have the most. SOMA, fidi, tenderloin, all down the embarcadero to the wharf. Go out and explore like a local and it's fine.

I've spent about 6 weeks there over the last 5 years and never once experienced a violent or confrontational homeless person. And I've eventured into some pretty sketchy areas and walked through camps to get to my pharmacy. I think if you look lost or like a tourist they target you. Know where your going and walk with a purpose ignoring all others that lay before you and you'll look like a local and won't be eff'd with.

Saw the 60 minutes special on homelessness in Seattle
Affordability seems to be the real problem.

Drugs play a big part as well.

This one Seattle couple and their kid lived in a moving tent city. Would take a bus to some homeless place to get a shower. Some really weird people.

I was never targeted, it was just behaviors I witnessed. Spitting, cussing, threats...none of which were aimed at anyone in particular. The whole walking around with a purpose thing may work to deter people looking to rob a tourist, but it won't necessarily help when dealing with a mentally ill person.

There was one part I remember that was terrible there, like exactly how the horror stories sound, but that was the only place it was that bad. Now granted we walked probably 10-15 miles that day so it could have been on the outskirts and my geography is wrong, but it was close to the Grateful Dead house.

Been there have a dozen times and I can count on one hand the number of homeless people I noticed. I'm not really sure why homeless people would deter someone from visiting a city, though. That's got nothing to do with me.
