We are flying into Milan-3 days, train to Venice-2 days, car to Florence-3 days, train to Sorrento -3 days, train to Rome- 3 days. Are jeans ok or do I need to wear khakis?

I wore shorts except on days when I toured a church. On those days I wore trousers.

Wearing shorts in Italy will immediately mark you as a tourist. No man in Italy over 15 wears shorts, ever, except at the beach or pool. Ever.

On the flip side if comfort is more important to you, and to be fair, everyone will likely know you are a tourist anyway, wear whatever you want.

You have to wear long pants and your wife has to have her shoulders covered at any religious site/church.

It depends on what kind of restaurants you want to go to. Jeans are fine for sightseeing during the day and for the more casual restaurants. If you want to go to some of the better restaurants you will feel out of place with jeans. Have a great trip. We went to Rome and the Amalfi Coast in 2014 and are going to Tuscany, Florence and Venice in a few weeks. You will love it.

No to shorts, but you can wear lightweight linen, cotton, etc pants and you will be just as cool as shorts. Jeans are fine except for the nicer restaurants.

I’m going on the same trip (pretty much) in May

I’m gonna wear the hell out of some shorts

It’s gonna be hot as hell

I’ll just buy some pants when I get over there as needed

All of the destinations listed by the OP will definitely not be hot as hell in May. July/August, yes....

All the people saying "no shorts" I'm not sure why. I saw plenty of people wearing shorts when I went. It was a little later (July) but many men had shorts on.
I wore pants because that is what the travel sites said to wear but I wish I had some shorts after seeing so many people sporting them. Only time I wouldn't have worn them would have been at night or going out to eat.

Exactly. There's nothing wrong with shorts during the day. At night trousers make sense although I'm sure on a couple of days we wore shorts to dinner as we were too far away from where we were staying to go back and change. We never got strange looks and we weren't turned away anywhere.

Some people take the "not looking like a tourist" thing a little too seriously. I'm not saying to wear all white new balance shoes and a fanny pack, but if it's hot and I'm walking all day, I'd be in shorts. You'll usually be an obvious tourist whether you know it or not.

I don't look at it as not looking like a tourist, but more respecting the norms for the country you're visiting. I don't think it's rude or anything to wear shorts in parts of Europe, and I agree no matter how you dress you'll likely look like a tourist. But as the saying goes, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Both times I've been to Europe has been in the fall/winter so it really wasn't an issue for me. But as I age, I also find linen or lightweight pants more comfortable than shorts.

I personally wouldn't wear jeans as they are heavier and hotter, it may not be smoking hot but you may still get some 80 degree days.

I prefer golf style pants in Europe, although I wear them a lot here too. Its just too damn hot most of the year in the south for me to be in jeans. They are light, look a little nicer, and most importantly pack down to almost nothing.

I agree I wouldn't sweat the shorts thing. Plenty of Australians and Brits wear shorts too. Not as often as Americans, but they still do.

If you don't want to look American, get yourself some Capri pants for men....

Rome is one of those cities where you kind of want to minimize it, due to the proliferation of gypsies and pickpockets, which are extremely plentiful. You don't want to go overboard slob American...but you still want to be comfortable because wgaf.

There's a balance somewhere between wearing a shirt with no sleeves/jean shorts and on the other side Capri Pants and man purse.

We had this conversation with a friend’s husband when we were in Portugal. He insisted shorts were fine so when we got into the vehicle I asked our driver if shorts were considered acceptable attire for men around town and he gave a long, “meh” as an answer. We didn’t see another man in shorts the entire day.

Screw it. You'll never see those people again. Who cares what they think.

Of course! And it’s much easier for women with sundresses and sandals. Men have to choose between shorts or pants. However, you will be treated differently in Europe based upon your clothes. You won’t be treated poorly for wearing shorts but we’ve always received better service when dressed as locals.

Ultimately, it’s probably not enough to make a difference if the comfort of shorts is that important for you.
