Me and the wife are trying to figure out a long weekend trip during spring break. We like history stuff so we thought it fit the bill since we've already been to Boston and DC. Any opinions or must do's in Philadelphia?

I didn’t care for Philly. Spent 48 hours there and felt it was 24 hours too long.

Have you been to NYC? It’s a much better trip for a long weekend.

Fair enough. If yall are history fans, plan a Trip to Gettysburg if going to Pennsylvania.

I love traveling for history and Philly did nothing for me in that regard.

I’d rather get a root canal.

We did Philadelphia last year. Was worth a long weekend. We stayed downtown and walked the historic area and found it safe and interesting.

Short drives to Valley Forge and Trenton, continuing the Revolutionary War era theme.

I did two days in Philly with the wife and kids recently and it seemed like the right amount of time. The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and Museum of the American Revolution are all close by, not to mention other historical sites in between. You can smash those in a day or spread them out and throw in something like the art museum (Rocky Steps, too) and/or old state pen--we did the Franklin Institute for the kids. I wish we spent longer at the Museum of the American Revolution. It's relatively new and had a lot of good info/exhibits.

Philly has quite a few good restaurants as well if you go closer to City Hall and Rittenhouse Sq.

I really liked Philly. And two to three days is good amount of time. Plenty of time to go see:

Independence Hall and Old City (Don’t pay to see the Liberty Bell, just go look at it through the glass),
Philadelphia Museum of Art & Rodin Museum,
Reading Market

Go to the Barnes. I know it's not history, but it's likely the densest art museum in terms of famous masters paintings in the world. You can get through it in an hour or two and you'll see dozens of famous paintings. I also suggest watching the documentary The Art of The Steal, about how the collection was moved from its original location into the city of Philadelphia.

This, plus an elite dining scene. The mouthbreathers making comments like “id rather get a root canal” have probably never been.

Absolutely. If you stay in the historical district near Thomas Jefferson Medical Center you can walk to the Liberty Bell and other history sites. There are great restaurants and breweries. The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Rodin Museum are must sees.

The museums are as good as it gets and the food scene is incredible with decent pricing. 48 hours is a good timeline if you enjoy those two things.

Sure, other than Baltimore, it's the worst of the Northeast coast cities (NY, Boston, DC), but there's plenty to see for a long weekend. Plenty of great restaurants, bars, breweries.

Liberty Bell
Independence Hall
Reading Terminal Market
Old City
Longwood Gardens
Museums
Rocky Steps
Check out a Phillies, Flyers, 76ers game.

I also thought the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall were kind of boring, definitely one of the best sports towns in the nation though, the food is also very good

Long weekend in Philly is a good trip. If you have a few hours to spare drive over to Atlantic City (1 hour drive) and walk the boardwalk. It's not Vegas but there are some good views as well as restaurants.
