Did anyone mention the aquarium? We went one evening years ago while visiting the area (open til 10 on the weekends) and really enjoyed it. It’s actually one of the best I’ve been to honestly.

Dabeerz, if it was just me I'd go stay in a tent in the rain all week and never see this souped up trailer park. I have a wife to entertain.

I have a wife and 2 young boys. Don’t see the problem, your wife obviously agreed/wanted to go on this vacation. But now you’re blaming the weather and lack of things to do on her? Hiking with rain jacket in a canopy is awesome, you don’t get wet. Is your wife too bougie to have fun in the woods or do you suck?

Just got back from spending a week there with the family. When we arrived, it was the usual summer crowd. The usual crowd is an eclectic mix from one spectrum to the other. About three days into it, there was a massive influx of trash that arrived. The only thing that I can think happened is that nothing else is open right now so everybody is hitting up the Smokies right now. It’s literally busting at the seams. It was so many people to arrive that it made it miserable. Gatlinburg is simply not equipped to handle that many people.

We are normals to that area as it can make for a great family destination. But not right now.

If this was your first time there, don’t judge it on how it is now. There’s usually a little bit of trash, but not nearly the amount there is currently.

What’s your hiking level? The NC side area Of the park has some awesome less traveled trails because it doesn’t have a “gateway” like Gatlinburg. Another trail which is Moderate difficult is Bote Mountain Or Chestnut Top. It’s elevation gains that make these harder so they aren’t as busy. The park is stuffed with people these days so hiking will require getting up and out before 8:00 AM.

Stop at Sugarlands Visitor Center and talk to VIPs there and they will guide you to any and all areas of the park.

You cannot access Cade’s Cove until 8:00 AM if you get there earlier and wait for it to open and drive through there is a hike to Gregory’s Bald you can access just past the CC Visitor's Center. Get a map or trail book before going. Abrams Falls will be nuts although 50% of people heading there should not go or it takes them 6 hours.

Well, glad it isnt just me. To quote the wife, it's like the worst trailer park in opelousas had a population of 4 million people and happened to be next to some mountains. Its horrible. Every road we went down yesterday, even in the park, was a traffic jam.

We're about to leave now to go hit some trails, this was my strategy for picking where to go. Strictly going by what has the most elevation swing to filter out the fatties

Yesterday I only went southwest through the park so we will go east today

Best time to view waterfalls is when/after it's been raining. Max Patch is always a good trip on a clear day.

We did Cade's Cove last week and ended up seeing 6 bears (around 10 am).

the cabin i rented was actually in pigeon forge near dollywood. great little area tucked away, waterfall in the back and we could get out for food, etc without going near the shitshow traffic on the main highway.

the last time we were there our cabin was secluded with a waterfall behind it the kids played in.

you don't go to gatlinburg to hang out w/ other people.

This!

When you go to the Smokey Mountains, you get an Airbnb that's by itself in the woods with a mountain, lake or river view!

Just got in from rainbow falls. Only saw one bear but it was about 10 feet away. Still lots of people but way less than anywhere else we've been, and no trash. It was a tougher hike than I was expecting. Found out the wife is not cool with bears at all.

Wife wants to watch the fireworks so I guess I'll have to suck it up and go get amongst the garbage. I wanted to go hike up somewhere to watch them but she doesnt "do woods at night"

Smart lady. They had some real fricking morons at Cade's Cove getting out their cars and literally running behind a mama bear with her cub to get a good shot. I mean full on sprint with a crowd charging it. Mama bear had enough and saw the baby cross the road into some brush, and did an about face and did a sprint back towards them. Stupid fricking people.

Luckily nobody did any of that kind of shite. We happened to be taking a break on a rock right where it wanted to cross the trail. We saw each other at the same time and it checked out

Friend,

Gatlingburg is the Biloxi or Gulf Shores of the Smoky Mountains. The east of Destin equivalent are the small towns of western North Carolina. I will not reveal the names of those towns for fear they become overrun by SEC school fans, which is always the beginning of the end for a nice getaway.

Yours,

From what I've seen so far, this is a decent comparison. The amount of tourist attraction crap here surpasses any place I've ever been before. It's a shame because the woods are beautiful. Everything is just overly infested with fat tattooed white trash

What concerned me the last day we were there is I honestly thought there was about to be a Black Lives Matter rally. It's pretty bad when Pigeon Forge is more classy than downtown Gatlinburg.

I think it's that all the people saw that East Tennessee was not considered a hotspot (at the time) and figured they were all gonna collectively go there at one time. It's not normally this bad. It gets crowded in the summer, but not the amount of trash that I saw this past week. At least, I hope I'm right. Because it would be a damn shame to see it get ruined and over run.
