Cashiers, Highland, Bryson City or Brevard are options in NC if you can find a room

Bingo. These are all very good answers. The other side of the park is a much different speed than Fratlinburg.

I've never been during a national holiday but enjoy it in quieter times, but I prepare myself mentally first.

This is where I messed up. Like I said earlier, I was expecting colorado lite. The only full day of hiking we got in was pretty nice, but there were still tons of people. Going on a somewhat tough hike mitigated that a good bit. The peddler steakhouse and Greenbriar were both very good dining experiences. Those were really the only two enjoyable experiences we had. The weather wasnt as much of a problem as expected.

EVERYWHERE else was a traffic jam, even within the park. We didn't have any interest in doing the attraction bullshite, couldnt have done it anyway

Having gone a few times to Gatlinburg with the family, I've come to the conclusion that the town itself is self-admittedly touristy and a bit on the cheeseball side. They don't pretend to hide that. What pushes it over the top, is the particular crowd visiting. There have been times that the overall crowd was your usual vacationer crowd. Then there are times where it seems like "country done come to town".

You don't go to the Smoky Mountains looking for a cosmopolitan experience. You go there with the intentions of it being the way that it is. That region of the country was never a cosmopolitan area, which is what makes it kind of attractive as a getaway. Maybe some people don't want that. When you go there, you want the opposite of that.
