How much would you take from an airline to get booted from a full flight?

Going to Germany today, and Lufthansa said the flight was overbooked. They offered an $800 Visa card to take the same flight the next day. I said No because I want to get my vacation started, but I’m thinking that money would have been pretty sweet and am reconsidering

Would need to pay $100 or so for a hotel near the airport, so it would be 700 net

Would you have taken the offer?

In a heartbeat I'd take $800.

Missing the very start of a vacation for a free flight for your next vacation would be worth it IMO.

I was facing a full flight from IAH to LAS just this morning. I volunteered to get bumped to a later flight for $400 voucher and First class on later flight. But, at the last minute, two seats opened up and they didn’t need mine.

Bummer.

My initial minimum acceptance is $1,000

My time is too valuable to even consider less than $1,000

I've seen $1000 offered. I had to make that flight or I would have jumped on it.

I think 1,000 and I would have done it. Especially considering I don’t have any concrete plans or reservations upon arrival

Hmm, how long is the vacation? And do you have a hard schedule for your arrival day? If it’s a longer trip, and the initial day(s) have some flex, I’d probably consider $800 as a starting point. Can you negotiate a hotel voucher in addition to the $800?

Heck yes, but I'd like a hotel voucher and upgrade to business class the next day.

It didn’t seem like they would budge on the hotel voucher. I ended up getting on the plane. It’s a two week trip and I don’t have any plans yet so that would’ve been as good a time as any to take it

Oh well. On a high speed deutche bahn train enjoying a Hefeweizen, so i can’t really complain

I’ve volunteered twice this year and neither time been needed, one was $600 and one was $800. The $800 I was in Atlanta at 9am and there were like 4 flights to get me home later in the day, but they didn’t need me. Op if they need to bump you until the next day they will offer a hotel voucher. Otherwise $800 is more like $600.

Sitting on the plane in Jackson Hole the plane was too heavy and they offered 6 $800 vouchers, they were taken in 5 seconds with two or 3 times the amount of volunteers than they needed.

They will most likely pay for your hotel room too if you ask them.

I volunteered from a lax flight to Vancouver once. There were three of us and we got a free hotel in LAX, each $500 and just had to take the the first flight in the morning instead of the one we were on, which was the last flight of the night. We also were able to cancel our hotel that night in Vancouver with no charge, so it was a great win all the way around.

A flight to Europe though, I would be a little more hesitant to give up a whole day of my trip unless it was longer than a 10 day trip.

i was on a flight to frankfurt, germany out of DFW when AA started asking for volunteers. didn't have to be in germany for another 2 days (the start of my summer school - i was going to be there for 3 months so missing one day didn't seem like a big deal) so i waited until the offer was an 800 dollar voucher and business class on the next day's flight. as an undergrad in college, i was more excited about business class than the voucher!

i took that, spent another night in the states rather than a german hostel, and used the voucher to travel to rome the following summer. if you've got some flexibility you can make out like a bandit.

I took $800 plus hotel room from Delta to fly home Monday morning instead of Sunday night. Would have done it for $600 in that instance.

$800 and I'll put my name in the hat.

Or if I know there is another flight that can get me to my destination around the same time or the same flight if it's a connection I'll take less than $800.

You see some crazy offers around sporting events. The airlines use computer algorithms to book seats but the computer doesn't know about big events.

I think when UGA played at ND last year there was a flight heavily overbooked because it typically had a bunch of no-shows. But this flight was filled with UGA fans making a once-in-a-lifetime trip. I think they got up to $3000 before someone took the bait.

Supported.

Airlines often have deals with airport hotels for their pilots and flight attendants to stay. They prob would have thrown that in if you asked.

Had to have been full of Jackson locals. Desperate times in mountain towns.

I would need more money if it is the start of vacation compared to return flight home. If they want to pay for an extra day of vacation, I’m cool with that
