I am done with Destin, FWB area, way too many folks, traffic, and the expenses are crazy anymore. Have been for years.

Headed to Pompano for a few days, then I suppose closer to Tampa.

How is Clearwater? what resorts do you recommend, etc? or around the Tampa area?

How about Marco Island, is the Marriott there and their timeshare there great?

I want the most best beaches, for the best prices with plenty to do for a family. Thanks baws.. .appreciate any recommendations.

Try the keys. WAY more relaxed and laid back than anywhere else in Florida.

If you’re looking for a beach, I’d avoid the keys.

Clearwater is nice but if you think Destin/FWB is crazy you’ll be shell shocked by the Tampa area. Look for a beach house to rent up around Mexico Beach or Cape San Blas in Gulf County. It’s the most low key area of the state and you can still have fires on the beaches

ETA: you aren’t going to find great beaches with plenty of family attractions that aren’t overcrowded or expensive in FL.

This. Really no sugar sand beaches in the Keys and what did qualify for a beach was destroyed by IRMA.

Destin, FWB area,

Have you tried 30A? Apart from Seaside and the areas closest to there 30A can make a world of difference as far as beach crowds go.

Wait until at least late September. Better rates, less crowds and cooler temps.

Those goals are incompatible with low crowds and reasonable prices. You can find less crowded beaches, but you’re not gonna find those near “plenty to do for a family”.

Captiva is nice. We've stayed at the Tween Waters Inn a few times and liked it.

This. Go after Labor Day. Beach and water are great late August into September.

Grew up in Florida, so not sure when the weather's good where it's "not crowded". But some of my favorites would be:

Perdido Key (Near Pensacola)

Amelia Island (Atlantic, so not "white sand" but very nice. Near Jacksonville)

Sanibel (Beautiful. Near Ft. Meyers. Can get crowded but not so bad).

We used to go to Long Boat Key (near Sarasota). Our favorite.

Ft. Desoto State Park (Near St. Petersburg)

St. George Island (used to go there a lot when I was in school)

In-laws used to live in St. Augustine. Lots of great (Atlantic Coast) beaches around the town and it's quaint.

I personally love going to Florida beaches in the non-summer months. Schools are back in. Not as hot. If you avoid the spring break parts of the year (March/April), or when all the snow birds land (December to January), you'll have a better and somewhat cheaper experience.

I’ve spent a lot of time as a kid, teen, single adult and married with kids on the beaches between gulf shores/OB to Panama City/Mexico beach. Married with kids and my top 5 are Perdido Key on the fla/bama line, Mexico beach, Pensacola beach, Navarre beach & all of 30A.
All have their pros & cons but all great.
I will never do destin, ft Walton, Panama City beach again.

As others said, if you go after labor day, the traffic and population is cut more than in half. You'll never wait in line at a restaurant, you'll get through every redlight in the first pass, you can actually make left turns, and the rates everywhere are cheaper, and there are still enough people around that you don't feel like you're in a ghost town.

Weather is alot nicer too.

But.. it's tropical storm season... and the travelers insurance only pays for a mandatory evacuation so you could end up having a few stormy days, so you'd have to be ok with that.

Not true. I went to Destin in early October last year and it was still slammed. I was shocked.

I'm over Destin as well.

Siesta Key near Venice on the left coast of Florida is a great, sugar sand, huge beach. Nice but quite the drive.

This is a great area. However, the planned communities such as Seaside or Rosemary Beach get crowded.

Go to Grayton Beach. No condos, no hotels, two cool dive bars and still near bigger cities if you want good restaurants. We've been twice--state park cabin one week and rented a house the other. Walked to the beach, one night literally had the beach to ourselves. Bonfires also allowed in this small community. And you can avoid Destin by taking the bay bridge and bypassing it.

once you have been to Destin area every other beach in Florida flat out sucks. Have fun sitting in a wad of shite or shells or seaweed or whatever.

Well I was there last September and it was not slammed.

I have a place in Pompano Beach. I prefer the Atlantic. If you do this in the winter, you will also. The Gulf is shallow, and it gets cold. The Atlantic has better fishing, better water, better food, and more to do.

This said, you need to understand the two dramatically different personalities between essentially the South/Midwest on the Gulf side, and the New York City/East Coast on the Atlantic side.
