I am flying out to Bend, Oregon for a wedding in October. I will be traveling with my wife and 2 year old. The cheapest travel days are Tuesday-Tuesday so looking at what a good itinerary would be. I definitely want to go to Crater Lake, but we love all things outdoors and scenic. What would be a good itinerary, and options to fly in and out, if the wedding festivities are that Friday and Saturday?

Oregon Coast - Cannon Beach, Rockport, Astoria
Around Bend - Smith Rock State Park, Tumalo Falls, Deschutes River, Sisters and lots of things around Bend.
Willamette Valley - Wineries, McMinnville Aviation Museum, Willamette Valley (Falls - edit)
Crater Lake - Whitehorse Falls

Hopefully I can get all those days covered in 5 days. Where do you suggest I fly into and out? I’m open to fly into Seattle, Portland, Redmond (Bend) but plan to fly on Delta as I have a lot of priority with them through work travel

I'd fly into PDX and drive to Multnomah Falls and along the Columbia River on the way to Bend. The whole area is beautiful. The previous post had a ton of great suggestions. Smith Rock is a must if you like nature. The Painted Hills are cool too, and not that much further from Bend.

A cool waterfall on the way to Crater Lake from Bend is Toketee Falls. Every inch of that hike has something cool to see.

ETA: Trillium Lake has a great viewpoint of Mt. Hood. Would be a nice place to rent a kayak and ride around.

They're just suggestions, depending on your interest.

If you only have five free days, you can easily fill those just around Bend & Crater Lake. Lots of outdoor activities in those areas. I wouldn't fly to Seattle - too much of a drive. If you're not doing the coast or Willamette, just as well fly to Redmond if they meet your airline needs. I've never flown into there.

We realized we can be a bit more flexible and chat GPT came up with this itinerary. Any thoughts?

Not to be mean, but have you looked at a map?
It is 16 hours of driving from Sacramento to Bend
It is 16 hours of driving from Bend to Seattle while doing the coast and the Mts you have listed on the way
That is with no stops and no 2 yr old accounted for

I'm a big fan of driving and packing stuff into small windows, but that will not work. You can do it but everyone will be miserable and you will see nothing.

I did 6 days between Portland the Oregon coast last year and barely scratched the surface with Portland for 2.5 days driving out to coast and using Cannon Beach as home base for 3 more days.

You should cut out literally half of that.

That’s fair and yes I’m cutting out the California portion. In my head it would work cause it was 6 hours to redwoods, then another 5.5 from redwoods to Bend but yes lots and lots of driving. May just fly into Bend or Portland, and then drive up and fly out of Seattle with stops along the coast, Mt Hood, and Mt Rainier before flying back

5 days with a 2 year old?

Flying into Redmond and stay in Central Oregon with an overnight at Crater Lake. There is a ton to do and see in the Bend area.

Just in outdoor activities:
Tumalo Falls
Smith Rock
Newberry Crater/Paulina Lake/Great Obsidian Flow
Three Sisters
Bachelor
Rafting on the Deschutes

Trying to do a full Oregon itinerary in that time period with a toddler sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I've done itineraries like that before, but we typical will do it over 17-18 days!

We last traveled that direction in the fall of 2023. Flying in and out of Porland - driving to Bend, a loop through southern Idaho, Crater Lake to the coast, up the coast and then a couple days in the Columbia Valley before returning to Portland to fly home. Since we had been to Portland and the Willamette valley before, we skipped those this trip except for a meal our last night in Portland.

Base near Bend. So much to see and do.

We loved staying at the Sun River Resort!

Definitely do a day trip to Crater Lake. One of the most amazing sites in the world.

Have you or your wife been to Portland or Seattle before? Or Oregon, etc?

I think that would determine the trip if not. As said, there's only so much you can do and there's tons to do if you have never been to that part of the country

ETA: Also with a 2 year old if you are dead set on Delta, I'm assuming ATL is your main HUB? Idk where Delta flies through Atl to the Pacific Northwest but your options will be limited on directs from ATL. I wouldn't want to add a 2nd layover with a 2 year old

Something to keep in mind as I've done this plenty of times myself. It doesn't make any sense to spend $200/ night on a hotel plus likely multiple meals eating out and other expenses, to save $50 or $100 each on 2 flights.

At the same time, if you are in the south with a 2 year old and don't travel a ton for work you likely won't make it back to the Pacific Northwest for a long time. So adding an extra day to go somewhere you likely won't re visit for 20 years is well worth it.

People that are old and retired and have times on their hands love to say "you can always go back". But those of us with kids, careers, etc. its just not easy to go back to Italy, or Seattle, or Brazil, etc for many many years.

Thanks! Yes dead set on delta just cause I have so many miles and perks from work trips. I think we will just wind up getting into Bend and staying there and just doing little day trips here and there and instead of money saving, think of smart flight times instead

He would be young enough to be lap infant but quite a few people have advised since it’s a long flight day from New Orleans to buy his own seat

We decided we’re gonna make it easy. Land in Portland and drive out to the coast for 2-3 days. Then drive inland to bend and stay there the rest of the trip and go see various things with Bend as our base camp. And MAYBE catch Mt Hood our last day back driving to Portland before flying out the next morning

Great Thread. I'm headed to Hood River on Friday and then Crater Lake on Sunday. Already decided to extend the trip now need to find 2 or 3 days of stuff to do as I head from Klamath Falls back to PDX.

I think I see enough activities just in this thread to fill a few days I had open Thanks to all
