My SO and I are heading to Fairhope/the Eastern Shore for a week later this month. We used to visit the area regularly back when a relative lived nearby, but years have passed since then. I’m hoping that y’all can point us towards some good restaurants, as well as attractions that may fly under our radar. We enjoy visiting historic homes and exploring architectural salvage yards. SO likes to fish, and I am a slow but steady cyclist. We both enjoy being out in nature. From what I have read on the forum while lurking, the area has changed a lot since our last visit. I hope that it retains the slow pace and charm that I recall from yesteryear. We have given up on our go-to vacation spot (30A) due to over-development and the attitudes that accompany it. Tia.

Friend,

There is a good antiques dealer, Charles Phillips, in Theodore that may satisfy that salvage craving, though hardly a salvage yard.

Our favorite eatery in Fairhope is The Dragonfly. We do not particularly enjoy the buffet at The Grand. They, like Mobilians, know how to ruin good crab meat. Grandmother once loved The Grand, but she was most disappointed in it after the corporate renovations.

For things to do nearby Fairhope, I commend to you TulaneLSU’s Top 10 things to do near Elberta. I regret to inform you that Sweet Home Farm closed in April due to retirement. The dinosaurs and Stonehenge may have been affected by Hurricane Sally, so please update the board with that information.

If you enjoy thrill seeking, check out TulaneLSU’s Top 10 rides at OWA. OWA’s water park is now also open. If walking about Fairhope is more your cup of tea, TulaneLSU’s Top 10 signs of Fairhope could direct your path. Our dear friend from the Food Board, MeridianDog, directed me through a tour through Malbis, Magnolia Springs, and Bon Secour, which may profit your time.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Thanks, PHNBK! We have rez for the Wash House. Any recommended dishes?

Will look into Southern Roots. (A local friend says to check out Bucky’s Lounge at the Grand.)

Anyone know anything about Jesse’s in Magnolia Springs?

Thank you for your response, TulaneLSU! I have enjoyed your informative and amusing posts while lurking. I look forward to perusing your suggestions.

We both love amusement parks, but I’m not sure how far our current budget will extend. We may have to save OWA for another visit, possibly one with younger relatives.

I had thought about taking a day trip across the bay on the ferry while we are over there. (Big ferry fan.) Perhaps we can combine that with an excursion to CP. His website and Insta are very intriguing. Don’t know too much about dining options on that side of the bay, though. Perhaps that will be the place to seek out someone who knows how to fry fish properly.

(Side note: The best meal of fried fish I ever consumed was at Pat’s Fisherman’s Wharf Restaurant in Henderson, LA. Each article on my seafood platter was exquisitely fried to perfection. I got the impression that they used a different fryer for each item, the flavors were that distinct.)

It's a nice ride, and we got some good photos along the way. Pelicans were everywhere.

A week is probably a bit long for Fairhope unless you’re going to head to GS/OBA for some beach days. My wife LOVES Fairhope because she loves to spend money and boutique shops! We do enjoy The Grand in Point Clear. I love golf at the RTJ course there.

Food, like TulaneLSU mentioned the DragonFly downtown is awesome. Hit the Warehouse Bakery for breakfast (not just donuts). My favorite dinner place is Gambino’s. It a must do every time we stop there. Panini Pete’s is overrated because it was on DDD. R Bistro is great food but if I remember correctly they’re a little fancy and you’ll prob have to eat at the bar w/o a reservation (we did). We ate at Locals on our last trip for the first time and the food was pretty good.

We do bring our bikes when we go because it’s so bike friendly. But for us it’s usually just a slow weekend of her shopping, me golfing and us just chilling. A day trip to the Fort via the Ferry would prob be a good day trip, been years since I’ve been to the Fort.

WilsonPickett, thank you for your thoughts. We DO plan on at least one beach day while there, weather dependent, of course. SO tried surf fishing during our last FL vacay, and is eager to make another attempt. A delicious pompano was the reward last time, so I am hopeful that luck holds.

I appreciate your comment re: bikes. I am debating whether to bring mine or not. It seems that every time I go to all of the trouble of schlepping them along lately, they stay on the sidelines the whole time. It’s good to hear that Fairhope is a bike-friendly destination.

I’ve found several state parks nearby that look interesting. I don’t think finding enough to do will be a problem. SO complains that I over schedule our vacations, anyway, so will welcome plenty of downtime.

If you do go down to the Gulf Shores/Fort Morgan area, you could look into a tour of Navy Cove Oysters. One of the principals posts here. I plan to make a visit this winter on a holiday trip.

Update on our Fairhope trip: I’d like to thank the posters who responded to my request for dining recommendations. We visited several of your suggestions, and enjoyed them very much.

The trip stand-out was Jesse’s in Magnolia Springs, which was the best meal of the trip for me. Thanks to TulaneLSU’s comment, I ordered the shrimp and grits, and it was so very good! DH especially enjoyed the crab and tasso dip appetizer. The staff there was very attentive and gracious, from our server to the manager, to the young lady who changed our seating arrangements that afternoon. (Protip: the side of the restaurant housing the Cold Hole bar is significantly cooler than the other half. If someone in your party can’t handle the heat, ask to be seated in that section.) We did not make it down to Jesse’s new location in Fort Morgan (Jesse’s on the Bay), but the scuttlebutt is to visit that location for their seafood, and the older Jesse’s for steakcentric dining.

We also enjoyed meals at The Wash House, Dragonfly, Sunset Pointe, and Tin Top Restaurant in Bon Secour, where I had the best fried green tomatoes in my memory, and my husband was equally enthusiastic about his collard greens side. Our go-to spot for breakfast in Fairhope was a cute bakery/coffeehouse called The Warehouse. Everything we purchased there was decent, and the hip decor and vibe were a fun start to the day.

We also made it to Bucky’s Lounge at The Grand, and enjoyed our first few minutes there, before the bar was invaded by a very noisy bridal party. I WAS able to get out for a spin on my bike, during which I noticed music coming from two locations along the bay. The initial spot was the American Legion Tiki Bar on the Bay, drawing a very convivial crowd. On returning, I noticed that Gambino’s Restaurant across the street had taken up the baton. Both worth checking out next time.

We did not make it down to Gulf Shores, or onto the Ft. Morgan ferry, due to weather. However, we did get over to the Theodore side of the bay to visit Charles Phillips Antiques. That place is a gold mine, and my husband was just as captivated by it as I was. Anyone traveling to Bellingrath Gardens or Dauphin Island should include a stop there if you love old things. Only open Thursday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 5 pm.

We enjoyed our visit sufficiently that I look forward to the next. The most enjoyable aspect of it was the graciousness of everyone we encountered. As I mentioned in my OP, our last few visits to 30A have been unsatisfactory. It has felt as if the locals have been crowded out by strivers keen to score points in some social media hellscape, and the pleasure of the place has been undermined. Mobile and its suburbs retains the Southern graciousness we look for when we travel along the Gulf.
