Going to Belgium in late February for work and I’m planning on staying a week after to travel with my wife.

Well check out Belgium for a few days but would like to go to another country while there.

I thought about the Netherlands but feel like we may be missing out on scenery due to the weather.

I also thought about embracing the winter and going to Sweden or Finland.

Any suggestions? She’s never been to Europe so I want her to get the most out of it.

France is doable too. If you’re in Brussels, you can drive to the Netherlands in under two hours. Watch out for the speed cameras though.

Italy is good. Weather is better. Venice, Florence, and Rome. Hotels probably cheaper. Last time I flew home from Europe, Lufthansa was on strike so they put me on air Brussels from venice.

That time of year will likely still be cold and rainy in Belgium, Netherlands and Paris. I would look at Italy , Spain, Portugal or even Croatia.

Definitely check out Bruges while in Belgium.

I would either go to France or Amsterdam, those are kind of the easiest answers.

Second on Bruges

Why not look into one of the northern lights igloos? No experience myself but would appreciate your experience if you do it.

Prime skiing time in Austria, Switzerland, France, or Italy.
Northern Europe will be gray, cold and rainy.

Did Helsinki for a few days this Summer. Honestly; it’s not bad. The people are friendly and it’s very walkable. 2 days is probably plenty of time. To that end; I’m sure it would be brutal weather in February.

A short $30 ferry ride from Helsinki is Tallinn. A town I genuinely adore. If you do one; you should definitely do the other. Great food scene. The best preserved medieval city in Europe. Simply gorgeous.

For skiing or wintery vibes I’d recommend the Alps over Nordic countries.

Innsbruck is a good location to fly into intra-EU, if skiing/snowboarding are you thing you have dozens of world-class resorts at arms reach.

If not the historic center is charming enough for a day exploring then you could go onwards to Salzburg and/or Vienna.

Spain & Portugal are also great for city trips that time of year - in Spain I would look at the Valencia & Andalucía regions - cities like Sevilla, Cádiz, Granada and València are all stunning and should be safe bets for mild weather and ample sunshine that time of year. And Porto & Lisbon are of course amazing as well.

The weather will be gloomy but Amsterdam and Paris are the two obvious choices here for someone who has never been to Europe and wants to get a taste. All three cities are closely connected by high speed trains and there's plenty of indoor sights to escape the weather.

Just an update. This is what I started booking...

Day in Ghent
Drive to Sint Sixtus Abbey and pick up a case of Westvleteren 12
Day in Bruges
Fly from Brussels to Stockholm and catch the overnight train to Abisko in north Sweden. Supposedly the best place in the world to see the northern lights
Spend 2 days up there and then train to Tromso, Norway for a day or two
Fly back to Stockholm and spend a day there

I didnt want her first trip to Europe to be gloomy so opted for diving right into the belly of the cold beast

Ill update with some pictures when we go. Hopefully plenty of aurora
