I paid $36 per day (including everything) for my May 27-31 drive in Italy---and that was even a one-way trip from Rome to Florence. And it was a hybrid SUV that great mileage (important in Europe).

Please give us some more details? I've rented cars in Germany, Italy, London, Amsterdam, France, and maybe some others. Prices have always been very comparable to the US, I've never paid more than $100/ day for a rental car and that's mostly been for a car that fits 4 adults or a family of 5 plus luggage.
If a rental car is more expensive, Uber and a private driver almost always are also except in some rare occurrences like dangerous areas or very poor driving conditions where the rental car companies can't really get insurance.
ETA: If you want to rent a luxury sedan or something, sure its more expensive.

Driving outside of the cities is no problem. Driving in inner-Paris, no thank you.
I drove from Starsbourg all throughout the Christmas villages in France and into Switzerland. It was awesome.

My travel in Europe is targeted to Fieberbrunn, Austria. I have been 15 times since 2009 and have visited many other cities and countries on those trips but always visit Fieberbrunn at some point. I have rented a car from Frankfurt, Munich, Salzburg and Venice to get to Fieberbrunn. Prices have been rising since covid.
Sure, you can get better pricing at different places in Europe but some places just cost more.

Be careful. 9 hour drive is iffy after a transatlantic flight.
I drove 7 hours from Frankfurt and that is a little too far.

This thread is about going to multiple cities/countries (sorry if unclear). For several of the days, we essentially parked the vehicle and didn't really use it (Paris e.g.)

Oh it would be a mess. I was meaning if I came to Austria. We are actually doing:
-La Roche en Ardenne Belgium for 3 nights to see all of the battle of the bulge area
-Metz France + Luxembourg for 3 days
-Bruges Belgium for 2 more nights
One day I will hit Austria.

As you can tell from this thread I'm pro rental car in Europe, but I would highly recommend NOT driving your first day of arrival.
You will be tired, time change, and just a new country unless you were super experienced there.
I rented a car out of London Heathrow a couple of years ago upon arrival, I had my family of 4 at the time with me. Really REALLY stupid to drive out of the UK, driving on the wrong side of the road, tired, etc.
I only drove to Kent, which I think was like 60 mins from the airport. But it was easily the most dangerous I've ever felt driving.

Now, you can certainly rent a LOT more expensive if you want. But like I said, under $100/ day fairly easily. If you have 2-3 adults, its generally cheaper than training around.

Thank you. I was joking about driving that far since a buddy told me to come meet him. We won’t have much of a drive. We will be doing Brussels, maybe Dinant, then off to La Roche en Ardenne. Thankfully I have driven in Europe a dozen or so times. I sleep great on planes and we are in Delta One. That said, I support not driving hours upon end after a flight.

I'm not even trying to be a woose as I'm not at all. I forgot that one of the reasons why driving in the UK after a flight was so hard, was because it was a stick and I was using my left hand. I had a very hard time adjusting to first being in the top right just like in the US. I felt like it should have been in the top right, up and closest just like the US. Up and furthest away just threw me for a loop, especially tired.

Agree with most of this.
We rented at FCO without going into Rome. Drove North into Tuscany and over to France, Switzerland, Germany, Cz Rep, Austria and back to Italy.
Parking was hard at first because we were unprepared. Easy once you learned where to park, except for getting out of some of the pay lots.
Like you said, saw things you would not normally see.
