Been planning a trip with my parents/siblings and we ended up going with Africa over Japan next year. My sister has a friend that works for Exeter Safari that worked up an entire thing for us.

1) September 1 - 2: Hemingways Nairobi, Nairobi
2) September 2 - 5: Lewa Wilderness, Lewa Conservancy
3) September 5 - 8: Hemingways Ol Seki Mara, Maasai Mara
4) September 8 - 9: The Retreat By Heaven, Kigali
5) September 9 - 11: Wilderness Sabyinyo, Volcanoes National Park

If you've been, please share anything you think we should know before going. I was a little shocked at the cost, but it's probably going to be the biggest trip we ever go on and we're guaranteed to see every animal we want to see. I'm most excited about the gorilla trek in Rwanda

There is still time to reconsider.

I was just happy not to see Joburg as part of your itinerary.

Definitely nice, although it's all the way out in Karen. You will have to travel reasonably far to get to anything. Breakfast is epic.

In Nairobi, Nairobi National Park is a decent way to get a miniature intro to safari. It's wild to see giraffes and stuff with skyscrapers in the background.

Carnivore isn't what it used to be since they outlawed bush meat. Arguably, not worth going to.

The Maasai Market in Nairobi can be a fun experience.

Blixen house also pretty cool.

The KICC building rooftop is also worth doing.

In general, I find Africa to be extremely welcoming and safe feeling. Yall will have a great time.

If you are feeling a little adventurous, have a driver take you through Kangemi (self-billed as the largest slum in Africa). I think you'll be shocked at the difference between a slum like this and an American ghetto.

Looks like you are staying in Kenya for your safari - I've done more in Tanzania. Either way, should be great. When you're out on the Maasai Mara, see if you can get your driver to take you all the way down to the Tanzanian border. They have cool stone markers you can take pics at where you can stand in both countries.

If you have any younger kids with you, you should print out and bring safari checklists. It's a way for them to actively track all the animals you see, down to various birds. (Fun for adults too, lol)

Most of the safari trucks are retro-fitted Toyotas...and they have built in coolers. Your guides will no doubt be packing those for you, but if there's a special beer/wine/alcohol you prefer, buy it and bring it so you can have it in the truck with you. I'll tell you - being out on the savannah in the middle of nowhere with your loved ones, cracking a cold one, enjoying each other, the animals, the scenery and the sunset...this will be memories of a lifetime. Don't worry about it being expensive, it will be worth it.

Jealous of your gorilla trek...

Is it going to be timed with the wildebeest migration? I can tell you - that shite is UNREAL.

We did Tanzania a year ago, just missed the migration, but the trip was amazing. Saw everything but a rhino.

No input for Kenya, other than I recommend an open air vehicle if they offer them. Much better experience IMO

Been to both Africa and Japan, would only do Africa again despite loving both personal preference, but I think you made the right choice.

GTFO

The city of Nairobi has a lower murder rate than the entire US. Kenya's as a whole is even lower. Livingston Parish's is MUCH higher than Nairobi or Kenya.

Back to your cave.

This is so true. I think about this all the time when I went to Zimbabwe even back in 2007. Riding all over the country in overlanders, going on safaris , watching lions hunt up close. The most majestic sunsets. The lions roaring at sunrise to wake everyone up. The stars. All of it was so great.

On your trip you will find many opportunities to buy "Africa Gems" and other pretty rocks. Avoid the temptation unless the price is very low. Kenya especially is known for gem mining and some local cutting. If you are into nice things send this guy an e-mail and inquire about a reliable outlet in Nairobi.

The company is based in Tuscon, but the mines are in Kenya. They are the real thing in terms of African gems.

I did South Africa, so this will not help. But doing a safari was the greatest family experience of my life. I am happy you are doing something amazing like this.
