Morning all, my son was flying yesterday and they diverted his plane due to weather then didn’t have pilots ended up canceling and rebooking for this morning. They sent him a hotel and meal vouchers, but we’ve never used anything like this.

He didn’t need the hotel because he ended up spending overnight with a friend who was close to the airport they diverted to.

What should I tell him to ask for in terms of like is the voucher available for future stuff or did it have to be used last night? How about the meal? How about other things he could ask for from Delta? We don’t really travel enough to know all the ins and outs of things airlines might do when you have trip craziness like that.

There will likely be no future stuff if it was weather related.

You may get lucky and get a rep who says they will throw something small at him bc pilots timed out, but don't expect anything of substance.

Jeez dude, just tell him to take the minor inconvenience and move on with his life. If he stayed at a friend's house then he wasn't out of pocket for a hotel room. Just take the next flight and get on with it.

Sometimes things happen in life that aren't convenient. Welcome to adulthood.

He wouldn't have been anyway. He said Delta put him up in a hotel if he wanted it.

So weather makes him kind of shite outta luck. Delta doesn’t control the weather so they were kind to offer the vouchers. I know that isn’t what you want to hear but that is the fair thing in the situation. I say that as someone with 1.8M miles with Delta and a diamond since 2014.

Well, that’s exactly what I told him and what he’s doing.

But it also doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t ask if people who are much more experienced at this to say “oh yeah, just go ask for the hotel voucher to be applied to a future ticket” or something like that.

I'd say your SOL unless the crew timeout was an egregious planning error on Delta's behalf.

Not totally true. TRansfer the voucher to DoorDash, InstaCart, Starbucks, Chic Fil A in the time period they announce but then once it's transferred you can use it anytime.

I made a post on this a few months ago

See Here

f you have had a delayed flight when flying Delta it's likely they sent you a food voucher. The voucher can't be used for in flight purchases but the idea is that you use that voucher at one of the dining establishments at the airport while you're waiting. Far too many times, you don't even get the voucher until you've taken off and a few years ago I tried playing with a few things to see how I could use it and not waste it and always forget to post it...not today.

So the voucher is basically a pre-paid mastercard number (QR code to use at the airport food court) with a exp date and CIV code but usually has an expiration date not that far after your flight. We flew 2/14, had a delay they sent us a voucher and it had an an expiration date of 2/19.

If this happens you you what you can do if you don't spend it in the airport is load that mastercard on to your doordash, Chi Fil A or Starbucks, etc app for payment and use it after you land/arrive.

I actually had this happen years ago to me. We were all loaded up and ready to go ahead of a line of weather. We pushed back and then pulled back into the gate due to weight imbalance and a subsequent paperwork error. We sat for 45m while they tried to get it sorted out. When we finally started to push back the airport shut down due to the storms and we were delayed hours.

I reached out to customer service, explained the inconvenience, and they acknowledged although the weather was the reason for the 2hr delay, the airline issues ended up putting us into the delay and they accommodated with a nice voucher for the trouble.

Yes he got two food vouchers. I’ll give him a shout real quick see if they’re still valid.

Update: they did send him a $200 voucher. It looks like for a future ticket. They sent that out of the blue it looks like.
