Crossing (driving) Canada border with expired passport *UPDATED*

My grandparents have are wanting to make a last minute trip over the northern border to visit my aunt. Grandmother's passport expired on June. Some on the internet say it's NBD and others say it's not worth the risk of being denied return to the US.
They will be traveling from TX so it would suck bigly to not be able to cross over after traveling all that way.
I know is kinda a long shot asking here but maybe someone has an experience to share.
Update: Mission accomplished, the trip to Dallas was successful and she has her passport.
Not without a bit of hassle though.
They wanted an actual ticket as proof of travel as the letter from her daughter in Canada wasn't good enough. So from the passport office, one daughter called another to get on a computer and buy a refundable airline ticket and then e-mail the proof to the agent. The agency's computer system was fricked up so that ended up not working.
Then someone who worked at the agency (off the record) told them what they would do in this situation is go buy a bus ticket a few blocks away in downtown Dallas. While my aunt went to get a bus ticket, I guess it was nearing printing time because the main agent just told them he trusted that someone was going to bring back a ticket and he started the process of making the passport.
Sounded like government at work. We know you aren't going to use this refundable ticket but we need it anyway to satisfy our red tape.

It will 100% depend on the border guard. Not worth the risk driving from TX, imo.

I crossed last summer and you need a passport. I wouldn't even try because even if you get into canada, Trump ain't letting you back in the US without a passport. It would suck to see your grandma in a cage.

Yo arse about to get Mountie’d, son.

Are they leaving tomorrow or something? A new passport takes no time at all.

Just order a passport card. You only need a card if you’re driving across the border.

A week. Everything I've seen days it will take a min of 2 weeks to get a renewal.

This qualifies as a situation that allows them to go to their closest passport office and get the renewal done in person immediately.
The three in Texas are in Dallas, Houston, and ElPaso.

They may be denied entry to Canada but would not be denied entry to the USA for an expired passport if they are US citizens, it would be a hassle and hold up but US citizens are not denied entry over a expired passport.
They will simply make you verify who you are and that can take hours or days depending on how much assistance you get from home. Normally they go out of their way to make it as big a PITA as possible.
It takes 2 hours to renew, why not just do the right thing.

Renew in person, or pay a third party service to do that for you.
In person is same day.
In person is same day.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. She is going to make the 2hr trip to Dallas on Tues to try and get it same day. Hopefully it works out as the internet seems says it needs to be an emergency and you need proof you are going to travel. Since they are driving, there isn't much in the way of "proof". Best case is the passport agent has a good amount of autonomy of who gets cleared and will see my 85yo GM isn't going to be a threat.
For giggles I'll bump this post on what happens.

I hold 2 US passports with the second only having 2 year validity.
I have renewed in the NO office in person at least 10 times over the years and have had no issue.
Pro tip: They only print once a day so get the appointment right before lunch and it will speed things up a bit.

The emergency language won’t be an issue.

Good call.
I remember getting mine back around 5pm. There was a printing issue so I look like an Oopma Loomlpa.
But hey, same day service.

I was going to say this is the best time in history to enter the US without a valid passport, just pretend like you speak Spanish and walk on in.
OP, tell your grandma to go to the passport office on Monday and get an expedited renewal. They have a special option for people traveling in less than 30 days. She may need to show proof of travel, buy a cheap ticket to Cancun or something. Cost around $150 and they give it to you on the spot or the next day.
ETA: I see this was covered and she is on top of it. Nice work TD

How does that work? How are you able to get 2 passports?

They will tell you to GTFO in the absolute most kindhearted way possible.

Some Countries don't like to see that you've been to certain other Countries..VISA issues take a while sometimes so that could be another reason
