I am going to post this on both the travel and food boards to see if anyone has travelled to eat here:
HiR fine dining in the jungle
In addition can anyone recommend a fishing charter out of the Tamarindo area plus things to do. Going for a week with a few other couples.

I just got back from a week in CR. We split half the week in Tamarindo and half the week in Arenal.
We booked a fishing charter through Tamarindo Sportfishing. They run 3 boats. They tried hard but we didn’t have a good fishing day unfortunately. I wanted to catch a rooster fish but that didn’t happen. I only boated one Mahi Mahi. That’s it. They may be a good charter but I don’t have enough of a sample size. Some days the fish don’t cooperate.
We had some good meals and some bad meals while there. I will check back on this thread when I get a chance and give more information as needed.

I will just say: don't expect a lot from the food in CR. The highlight of most of our meals was the ample fruit served with breakfast. Much of the food is fairly bland, and you'll likely make heavy use of lizano sauce and chilera (pickled spicy vegetables).
Breakfast was usually my favorite meal, and I'm not a huge breakfast eater. We ate at a lot of soda tipicas (basically like a walk-up kitchen), and they can vary GREATLY in quality. Our favorite was in Montezuma, and we stayed right next to it. It was fantastic. Others served food that was pretty rough.
Anyway, think fresh ingredients prepared simply and without a lot of seasoning with a heavy dose of rice and beans... and that's costa rican cuisine.
oh: don't turn your nose up at Italian/pizza. They have a historic italian influence on their cooking, so there are some legit Italian and pizza joints scattered around CR.

Look into some restaurants off the beaten path while you're there. We stayed at the Riu Palace in Guanacaste this past summer and ate at a nearby restaurant called the Monkey Bar. It was a run-down shack kind of place, but the seafood-stuffed lobster I ate there was one of the most incredible fresh seafood dishes I've ever had (likewise for my son's whole fried snapper). I'd put it in my top 5 meals ever, and you'd never guess that from the looks of the place. Had to fight flies off the whole time while eating outdoors, but it was well worth it. It's not in the area you're staying, but I'm sure there are places like this all over Costa Rica. We had some great meals at the fine dining restaurants at the resort, but Monkey Bar is the meal we'll remember for a lifetime.
ETA: And yes, it's called the Monkey Bar for a reason.

Ditto what Hogfly just posted. I had a very similar experience. However we did finally find a good home cooked Costa Rican meal at a farm in La Fortuna which is near the Arenal Volcano. It was a part of an excursion where they feed us. I wasn’t expecting much. We were pleasantly surprised by the food which was miles better than the other local offerings that we had tried.
We did find some good Italian, pizza, and steaks while in Tamarindo.
La Patagonia is an Argentinian steak house in Tamarindo and the steaks were outstanding. Highly recommend. We ordered the Proveleta grilled provolone cheese and an empanada for apps. I had the skirt steak and wife got the tenderloin. Both were great.
We stopped at an Italian place right on then beach front called “People” and also in Tamarindo. I was a bit skeptical when the guy up front was telling me that they make all their pasta in house. It was good. The pasta was like velvet and also had a good steak.
We didn’t like any of the little seafood places along the beach. They make it look pretty but the flavor wasn’t there.
At the end of the trip we found a big food court which was just behind La Patagonia. Just walk down the street that it sits on. The food court has 10 different places. We got pizza and some Chinese (beef with broccoli) and they were both solid. Had some other interesting places in there that I wanted to try and wished we found the place earlier.

Lots of meals with beans and rice. The one thing I enjoyed most while being there was the guanabanas. frick those things are delicious when pureed.

Was there in October. Stayed outside of Jaco. Fished with Maverick Charters. Completely struck out aside form a huge hen Mahi Mahi. Had a group stay in Los Suenos. Had two other groups stay outside Jaco on Playa Hermosa.
Gorgeous place. But we didn’t go for the food. Hiked up into the mountains. Hit some Class 4 rapids on the way down them. Brought a personal chef out twice. He nailed the Mahi Mahi for us.
We found a beach front surfing hostel outside of our neighborhood on Playa Hermosa that had an open air bar and restaurant beachfront. We ate there for breakfast and dinner several times. We cheated a bit in that we had a guide/driver through our charter service who knew every single place to get a bite or walk us through a menu. But as previously stated, expect beans and rice as they’re a staple. Banana pancakes for breakfast was legit af.
Cannot recommend CR enough. Just an amazing trip and a beautiful country. They drive on the right side of the road. Don’t expect English.
Oh...if you’re in Jaco, Los Suenos has several great, familiar dining options near the marina. They also have a nice wine/liquor store with great options.
If you are thinking of going, it’s a $518 flight to go round trip on Delta Comfort+ with a connection in Atlanta. Ridiculously cheap. Cannot recommend you guys head out that way enough.
ETA: I'll add in an Easter Egg here. If you're in the Jaco/Playa Hermosa area, find your way to Playa Mantas. It's a locals beach according to our guide. Seemed to bear out to be true as we went mid-day during the week and were the only people on the beach.
It was something out of a travel brochure.

I wanted to catch a rooster fish but that didn’t happen
We went to Costa Rica a few years ago and stayed in Playa Hermosa. We went out on a charter and had zero luck all day. Caught some small fish here and there but nothing worth writing home about. About 5 min before we were going to start and head back in, it hit. I was on the pole for this one and for the next 45 minutes I worked to get this damn rooster fish in. I have never experienced anything like this in my 40 years on earth. It was raining cats and dogs on us as well which wasn’t helping getting this fish in.
So after 45 minutes the fish finally gets to the boat and the main boat hand is standing next to me to bring it in when it gets close enough. He has the line in his hand and all of a sudden the line breaks. The deck hand flew into the water and was not surfacing for a minute or so. We finally saw him about 15 feet away from the boat with the fishing line wrapped around his hand. This mudah phucker held onto the fishing line and brought this rooster fish into the boat. It was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. We have video of it all going down as well.

Wow. Beautiful fish. That’s an amazing story.
I hope you tipped that deck hand.

Wow, all this food looks so delicious.
It seems to me that there are many people that have a large backpack of experience in traveling in this thread. Have you ever thought about the creation of an Instagram travel blog? This becomes easier to do because of such web services as https://instagrowing.net/buy-instagram-autolikes/. In my opinion you definitely should share your experience with others.
