I have a wedding next spring in San Francisco, and I'd like to make a vacation out of it. That said, I don't want to spend more than the requisite two days in San Francisco for the wedding.

So, I'm tentatively planning a trip to a smaller coastal town north or south of San Francisco - I'd say my range extends two hours north or south.

Basically, I want to grab an AirBnB on the coast and be in a nice, low-key smaller town with good hiking, groceries, restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, vineyards, etc.

I basically want to unwind for 4 or 5 days following the wedding and enjoy the coast, the scenery, some good hiking, good cheese, wine, beer, etc. I'm not looking for much hustle and bustle, partying, or late-night nightlife, etc.

Any recommendations?

Stinson Beach would be cool (I’d go just south to Red Rock beach to hang out in the sun)…Peacadero if you want to be south of the city.

Guernville isn't coastal but it fits the bill. Really cool little town on the Russian River.

With what you're looking for, Monterey / Carmel-By-The-Sea is an obvious option.

Calistoga.

It’s not a coastal town but it is one of the most beautiful US towns I have visited in my lifetime

You may want to look into Pacifica, just south of San Francisco. Beaches with no crowds. Sleepy, foggy, and more like CA from 50 years ago.

Sausalito is great, just across the GG (although that traffic can be awful)

Half Moon Bay/Princeton to the South

Bodega Bay area is kind of cool if you want to stay coastal, plenty of elite vineyards within an hour or so. Not sure if there is enough there to occupy your time otherwise though. But it is a pretty area and the Lodge is a good hotel.

Look for an area that has a Redwood remnant forest. There is one west of San Jose I think the coast to sea trail crosses hiking and photos are awesome...Not far from coast.

We are going to Carmel/Monterey area in about 3 weeks. It is pretty expensive and not much availability, probably because it gets so many weekend travelers from the Bar Area. But we found a AirBnB for about $300 a night; off Carmel Valley Road a little inland from Monterey, right around the corner form a nice looking winery/restaurant. Plan to hike in that area, explore the towns, and head to Big Sur as well.

My favorite place around there is the Napa Valley but that is not on the coast. If I wanted to stay on the coast I would go to Carmel. If I wanted to stay near San Francisco but by the water I would stay in Sausalito.

Stinson is close and a good spot for most of the things you want to do. It's not a long drive to Point Reyes where there is a ton of hiking and Point Reyes station is cool. Muir woods is close and you can stop at the grocery in Mill Valley for crossing the hill. There are a couple of good restaurants at Stinson and a small Market with essentials and some fancier stuff.
