Is this common? Frowned upon? Considering this for a trip the week after Thanksgiving and not sure when to tell the school.

When they are young, they are probably not missing much anyway. We've done it some where they might miss a Fri or long weekend.

It gets harder the older they get. When you miss high school, you miss a lot of homework and makeup can be a killer.

Now, all the parents that miss school because of travel sports or cheerleader competitions can have that!

Yeah I’m talking 2nd Grade at the oldest. Entire family is gonna meet up at Disney. One group does home school so they can go. Grandparents are all retired so they are flexible. It’s mainly my kids who will miss but we could make up whatever they need us to. That week looks like a great time to go so I don’t want to plan a huge trip during a really busy week just cuz kids are out of school.

I do it every year, usually a week in the fall and a week in the spring. Sometimes they give me a hard time if I exceed the allotted number of absences for the year, but I really don't care.

2nd grade is fine, we did Disney and pulled our kids out one time

Just make sure they are not missing any important testing that might be harder to make up.

Most parents write a note to the teacher letting them know their child will not be at school on X date. Which is helpful because then the teacher can get the kid all the work a day early so they have it all when they return.

If you check in with the teachers 2 weeks or so before the trip all is well. Disney is not exactly a huge educational opportunity but we try and use our trips for education too. Sure there will be make up work but often times that can be completed before you leave for the most part.

True for all parents.

My son (my other kids are pre Kindergarten) and I did a road trip through Ontario and Quebec last fall, and we are going to Boston and Maine this fall. We've done road trips through California and Arizona in the past, and we went to Turks and Caicos in the spring. We've also missed a few weeks for Disney. He definitely gets more out of these trips than a week of school.

We always let the school know weeks ahead of time as a courtesy, and I tell them that the trip is educational.

Not sure how much testing a 1-2 grader is gonna have but I can check once the calendar is set. We have done Mardi Gras Break and it was just too busy. I’m skipping school from now on if we go somewhere that has busy times.

My neighbor is doing the exact thing - Disney after Thanksgiving. 2nd and 6th grader. I personally would not tell the teachers. Some could be jerks about it and not excuse the kids for missing. If it ever came up, I'd say the kids had the flu or something. Really not any business of the school / teacher. As long as they don't miss much school it's no big deal.

Well that is just retarded... If you let the teacher know ahead of time many will work with you to make sure the child isn't missing too much. Why? Because it is a pain in the arse for the teacher, your child, and you to catch them up for a week's worth of material.

We do it usually a week and another long weekend every year. Vacations during the school year are so much better than the summer.

I truly believe that kids become more well rounded people through travel. The makeup work is never that hard (oldest will only be in third grade) and we let them know a week in advance.

Most public schools allow kids to have 10 Unexcused absences a year.

Really? 2 elementary school kids missing a week worth of school in between the 2 major holidays? I've had 2 kids finish both elementary and middle school recently, and I assure 7 and 11 year olds are not missing anything. The last 3 weeks of school consists of watching movies and field trips just to pass the time, because the curriculum year is already over.

And like you said, MANY will work with you, but not all. So, what would you do if a teacher said no, I'll not excuse this missed work and your child will be given all zeros?

The reason for my opinion is because I saw this very scenario happen last year. The principals had to be involved and it turned into something stupid at a middle school. The kid turned out ok, but the teacher left after the year because his feelings were hurt over a kids vacation. And the bad part was that the teacher was told before hand how the Dad works pipelines and is gone for months at a time without seeing his family. The teachers at the elementary school had no problem with it, but this one guy did. Moral of the story is that no one thinks twice when a kid gets the flu and misses a week, but all it takes is one in a 100 teacher decides that they know better about a family dynamic and causes a stink.

We usually take our kids out the week before a school vacation because they are usually just goofing off for the week leading up to thanksgiving or Christmas. I was in a hot tub in Orlando with a teacher (no pics) and we were talking about kids, vacations, and missing school. She told me she thought it was great when parents took their kids on vacations like that. They learn a lot.

Last 3 weeks is different than the week right after Thanksgiving. Why because teachers now have to cram stuff in for grades since the week for Christmas holidays the school has all sorts of activities and students leave for vacation, so getting in grades is a pain in the arse.

Name a school that does this anymore NO one receives 0's, not even for suspension anymore.

I'm gonna call BS and bet there was more to the story, but go for it.

If the school gives me shite I’ll have my wife claim a #metoo claim against the principal. Usually the week before and after a school break isn’t very productive so I doubt they miss much. My sister went to Disney over Mardi Gras and their kids teacher said they should have taken them out a school the week before when it wasn’t as busy. Most teachers are lazy and just want a 3 month vacation anyway. Having one less kid to deal with probably makes their life easier.

Man you nailed, teachers should be replaced by bots or paid like a baby sitter. 10 bucks an hour for each kid for 8 hours a day.
