Is there any way to avoid paying 2000$ round trip for 2 people?

I’m willing to travel to NY, BOS or CHI

I have SOUTHWEST miles so that flight would be free

I’d like to go in MAY

I realize that’s the height of tourism

There are flash deals to Rome all the time. You have to be willing to buy the ticket then and there and they are almost always from major cities. Tickets as cheap as 500ish.

Sign up for Scott's Cheap Flight emails and go to The Flight Deal often.

Also check Costco. If you are a Costco member, I've seen 5-7 days in Rome for 2300ish during some times (that's flights and hotel).

You can also consider flying to Dublin, which is generally the cheapest in Europe to fly to and hop on a discount airline like RyanAir for super cheap from there.

(FYI: I plugged in a random week in May on Costco. The cheapest deal was a week in Rome for about 3000 for two people, flights and hotels.)

Sign up for the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Ink Preferred, get the signup bonus, and fly on the points for essentially $250. You can email me if you'd like to learn more.

Buy an inner tube and a row, walk to the MS river, start paddling. If you want to use your miles, I'd recommend flying to New York and start your paddle from there.

Sign up for some websites that show deals. Set a google flights tracker for the dates you are interested in, it will send your gmail an email every time the flights change. Airlines do deals that last only hours at a time, sometimes a day or 3. Have your dates set and be ready to buy as soon as it hits whatever price you will be happy with. If you set a flight tracker now I'd bet you will be able to get tickets between now and March for under $800, maybe close to $600 but that will take a little luck.

Also, Scott's deals and some other websites will email you deals on the reg. Many are very good.

Milan is one of the cheaper cities to fly into in Europe. You can get flights from JFK to MXP for under $500 RT in coach.

Then maybe Ryanair or the train down to Rome.

Fly into ATL and rent a car. About an 1.5 hour drive to Rome.

I flew $813 RT from Seattle to Rome (British Airways) this past July (high season) with tix found on FareBoom last November. In low season, you would be able to find fares for less than $1000.

Keep using aggregators to look for May airfare. Milan was a good idea too because flights into it on Lufthansa and other carriers are often cheaper than Rome.

You may be lucky enough to find a sale, but $1,000 per person is not that bad. I am going to Italy around next Easter and just paid $1,300 per for a multi city trip and was happy to get that because many were going for almost $1,500 per.

we got RT tickets for 430 a piece out of Charlotte through Scott's cheap flights. going in March, bought the day we saw the deal.
Your best bet is to do that, or Flight Deal, and be ready to pull the trigger at a moments notice

Keep an eye on prices from NY or Boston. A buddy is going in April and booked his ticket from Logan for $450 round trip.

I went last April for ~$550 or so.
