Carnival and the "trashy" reputation

I know many on this board and other places view Carnival as the "trashy/WalMart" cruise line. I never felt or saw this on the three cruises I went on Carnival out of New Orleans. (all three on smaller boats like Elation and Triumph).
Then, last week i went on the Sensation out of Miami.
I'll write more later, and while I loved the boat and the crew, the amount of ghetto trash on that boat was simply stunning. Saw four fights break out during the week, including one guy beating the crap out of his wife, which a bunch of us jumped in to try to break up.
We saw rudeness all the time, at least 20 people at all times complaining at the guest services line, drunkeness like I haven't seen since frat parties in college, and clothing choices that were beyond abysmal.
About a day into the cruise, I realized what was happening. At least half the boat was from Atlanta. Apparently it's a popular port for Atlanta.
So I'll continue to cruise Carnival, just not out of Miami.

Just looked at the reviews for this ship and most agree with you especially this disgruntled passenger.

Imagine going to Walmart that has a Golden Corral in it with the crowds of Six Flags...only...you cant leave. That.s exactly what this was. I'm not wishing to be judgmental, but I'm pretty sure these people had used their tax refunds for this vacation.

Lol, people saying Carnival is trashy/Wal-Mart is the pot calling the kettle black. Almost all cruises are trashy.

True, but you can subject yourself to different levels of trash by which cruise line you pick. Carnival is the cheap party boat. You can expect that level of trash by choosing Carnival.
Royal Caribbean is family trash.
Holland America is old folks home trash
Celebrity is 30s-50s trash
Etc

Pretty sure the transatlantic and round the world cruises my grandparents always took on Cunard weren't trashy

Yep. Discount cruises out of Miami, New Orleans or South Texas, particularly 3/4 cruises, will have some socially inept people. Almost anywhere else in the world they are much better.

If you can't identify the trash on a Carnival cruise sailing out of freaking Louisiana, then YOU are probably the trash.
What are you talking about? I can identify the trash, and I am calling them out on being trash. You make no sense.

Small ship adventure cruises are anything but. You spend much of your time kayaking, hiking etc
To be fair, I don't think people really include these when they think of cruise ships.

I responded to your post because I agreed with you what you said and my comment was directed at the OP who claimed to have sailed 3 times from NO and never identified trash on those ships. Next time I will be sure to respond to the proper post and/or explicitly state what my intentions are behind my response.

I prefer to see the real world outside of a floating hotel
So land based hotels aren't trashy? Or, are you trashy if you stay at a land based hotel too? Can you ONLY stay at Hostels, AirBNBs, etc?
Curious on what exactly makes a "floating hotel" trashy...the floating part or the hotel part.

I don't know if I would call that "fair". There are hundreds of cruises on numerous cruise lines from dozens of points of embarkation on dozens of itineraries that are not trashy. Saying all or almost all of them are just because someone isn't thinking of the non trashy ones is ignorant, not fair.
In the last 14 months I've been to Hawaii, on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, the the Philippeans, to Disney World twice, on a Disney Cruise, I've got a trip to Punta Cana in October, another trip to Disney World next January and a Royal Caribbean cruise on the Allure of the Seas next May. I've got experience on cruise lines, "trashy" and not. I see the value in traveling and seeing the world not on a boat but as a husband and the father of a 7 year old I know there are other non trashy viable options as well.
Just because you don't know if any that aren't trashy doesn't mean they don't exist. BUT, speaking down on someone elses vacation makes others feel better about their own.

Probably not. Usually it's the short, sub $500 cruises you have to worry about

I'm going on my first cruise with the family over Thanksgiving. It's a 7 day Norwegian out of Nola. I've read all of the cruises are trashy, but willing to take my chance on a 7 day on a non carnival. Prices are a little higher since it's a holiday so that may help.
My kids are excited about visiting four ports in three countries. I will try my best to get away from the extreme touristy crap at the ports and let them experience the area a little.
If it's a little trashy, I have a balcony to retreat to and an unlimited alcohol package, so I will survive.

Depending on how this goes, I would really like to go on an Alaskan cruise. I've been to Alaska once a long time ago and it was amazing. We go see family every two years in Seattle, so I think it would be a great way to visit them for a bit and then get my kids on a cruise up that way.

Not sure why all that was needed for my post, but ok... A vast majority of people don't normally think of barefoot cruises/adventure cruises when they hear that you are going on a cruise. The whole fair thing was just using a figure of speech, no need for multiple paragraphs justifying your vacations to me, I don't really care.

I agree, as said above, it's just not what someone thinks of when you say you are going on a cruise. They think large liners. I like barefoot/adventure cruises, hell I want to do one of the sail your own versions soon.
