I would enjoy some Latin "company".

I used to be the mayor of BA, I’m driving, I’ll send recs if this is still going later

asking for salt and/or pepper at a dinner table is considered insulting.

Went like 2 weeks before COVID so I'm sure a lot of stuff has closed.
Restaurant highlights were Don Julio, iLatina, Mishiguene.
I liked the hop on bus. Safest was to get to the art district that can be a little seedy. Very touristy but me and my then gf booked a private tango lesson and then our teacher took us to a few local clubs to practice. Got points for that one.
Really just enjoyed roaming the neighborhoods, specifically Palermo Soho.
I will say BA was definitely the lowlight of my Argentina trip. I enjoyed my time but Iguazu, Bariloche, and Calafate are what really sticks in my memories.

I just got back from Argentina. We did Buenos Aires, both sides of Iguazu, and El Calafate/El Chalten. All were a blast.
Re BA: everyone will tell you to stay in palermo. We stayed there for the first part of the trip and didn't really care for it. We switched over to the Recoleta area and loved it. It's a fun city to walk around, eat street food, and they have a ton of great markets (especially on the weekend).
Don Julio/Mishguene were awesome meals. Highly recommend both.
Pro tip: Argentina has a black market exchange rate. If you bring hundreds, you can exchange them for double what the actual peso currency rate is. I brought 2k USD and ended up with 1 million peso. Was able to double my spending power in an already very economically depressed country

Love it. Was there June a few years ago. I stay in Recolleta or Microcentro. The subway is safe and easy but stops running after 11 or so which makes it hard to get home from a typical dinner.
Don Julio is a must, skip the steakhouses under 9 Julio, also I enjoy Fervor and El SanJuanino but there are hundreds of good spots. It is a very cosmopolitan town.
If you like nice shoes, get a pair or two at Calzados Correa. Cash only.

My daughter is going with LSU abroad in July, I was wondering if you were ever concerned about your safety?

This is a huge key to a great Argentina vacation, unless you just want to waste lots of money by paying twice as much for everything.
It's technically a "blue" market, because the transactions are not illegal.
Go here to see rates: LINK
And it's easy to do. You simply walk along Florida St. (it's a pedestrian street), and people will call out to you to exchange. If you agree to the rate, they will take you inside one of the newsstands and change with you inside.
Anything that you pay for with a card will exchange at the official rate, so you will save 50% by making a blue-dollar exchange and paying cash.

WTF. I went there in Feb 2020 and the blue dollar rate was like 75/1 (official rate was 60/1).
Is Argentina super cheap now or are people there just screwed?

YES.
The inflation rate is currently at 109%.

I was there the first week of March that year. The shutdown of everything was imminent.

Sad to see. I remember how cheap cab rides were. We got "scammed" going to the airport for one our intracountry trips because he told me he had to pay to go back to downtown BA. The back and forth was like $18 USD. Only found out it was a scam because when I left the country for good he only charged me one way. Safe to say he got the tip of his lifetime since I had some pesos I'd never be able to spend again.
I'd see these guys running on empty and pulling into gas stations to go more than 5 miles. Don't know how the average person does it there. An iPhone was like a normal persons yearly salary.
Such a wonderful place to visit though.

Argentina is pretty damn safe. Just tell her not to wonder around too late and don't wear any flashy jewelry

There don't appear to be great Airfare deals to south america are there? I'd love to go, I'm just not sure I can put it in top 3 international trips unless it was super cheap.
What's reasonable american dollars to spend on things like lodging, food, etc?

I recommend pricing airfares out of MIA. You can get a cheap flight to MIA on a separate ticket. Also, note that the runway at what was formerly the domestic airport (AEP) has been lengthened and can now handle A330s, so there are now flights from the US there, and that airport is much more convenient than EZE.

I didn't know this, but apparently, VISA and MasterCard have recently negotiated a deal with the Argentine government to give you a rate close to the blue-dollar rate, called the MEP rate.
This means that tourists can reasonably use credit cards without getting completely ripped off. If I were going today, I would still try to change some cash at the true blue rate to save more, but the difference is not so large now.
Here's VISA's statement about it: LINK
