Planning a long weekend in September and deciding between these two. Not going crazy on the outdoor activities - really would be just hiking and perhaps paddle board or rafting - but a lot of walking around town to check out good restaurants and breweries. Thanks!

Missoula. Depending on when you go, you could hit peak color change there. Pick a weekend when the Grizzlies have a home game.

Have not been to Missoula but Bozeman is awesome. Great downtown with kind of a college town feel as they strongly support the MT State Bobcats. They have a nice mountain nearby with an “M” made out of stones at the top that is a nice hike as well as another mountain across the street from which we saw elk rutting when we were there in Sept ‘22.

I can't speak to Bozeman, but we really enjoyed Missoula. It's a college town with good restaurants, bars, etc...

Both are great. Missoula has the Kettle House amphitheater. Bozeman is closer to Yellowstone. Both have plenty of restaurants and breweries. Paddle Boarding and Rafting may tip the scales to Missoula. September can get cold and would be latest my southern arse would enter the water.

Did five days in early September in 2020 first two based in Missoula, day three did bitter root and Darby (home of Yellowstone ranch), last two did Flathead, Whitefish and Glacier. Phenomenal trip.

Friend,

Neither is very interesting and neither is worth more than a day or two of your time there. Missoula has better in town hiking, with Mt Jumbo being an easy hike and giving good views of the town. If you enjoyed A River Runs Through It, it is Norman Maclean’s hometown and you can see the church and the manse in which he grew up. The university campus is fairly nice but small.

We only spent a day in Bozeman and found it less than interesting. The human settlements in Montana just are not very interesting and always leave something wanting. Montana is a place we go to hike and fly fish. The towns are not a draw in the slightest.

Friend,

Might I suggest you snack on a huckleberry bear claw from the Polebridge Mercantile at Bowman Lake whilst contemplating the beauty of the area. Perhaps your mind could be changed!

Yours,

The only good thing about Bozeman is that it’s close to Montana.

Where do you live? Because this is a terrible take. Bozeman has gotten too big but it’s still better than 99% of towns in the US.

I’m 99.9% sure his hot take is politically motivated. We call it Bozeangeles, but insecure Montanans don’t like it anymore bc of what it’s “turned into,” even while Missoula is more liberal than Gallatin County.

We flew into and out of Bozeman a couple of months ago for a trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons. I found a nice place called Maven’s Market where I bought a cup of hot chai, some German and Icelandic chocolates, and an Island Bamboo pakka. They also have a vast variety of cheeses and spreads. I highly recommend stopping there.

I live about 2 hours from Bozeman. Lived in Bozeman for many years. If you like traffic, crowds and shitty overpriced food/drinks knock yourself out. And the Bozeangeles moniker has been around for at least 15 years

I know a retiree who lives about 30 minutes outside Bozeman. They said it has been having trouble with homeless the last few years. Is this becoming a problem?

You would not believe how many homeless are in Bozeman for such a cold climate. Lots of people living in campers/vans etc as well. The far left city council naturally refuses to pass any ordinances with teeth. I will say that a good number of these people are not troublemakers and are simply priced out by the absolutely insane RE prices. There is certainly a drug/crime element in the city now though.

If you have ample services, you'll have a lot of drug addicts and alcoholics looking for a free ride.

Even in Montana. But there its easy to escape from...

Oh I know but it’s getting harder lately. Take a look at Bozemans newly elected mayor. A self described community organizer and tenants rights advocate. Like I said, the best thing thing about Bozeman is that it’s close to Montana. If you want to visit Montana, then do so. If you want to go to a a cool city for fricks sake Bozeman??
