FYI, DO NOT put bags of chips in your carry on and go through TSA Security at MSY! We brought some snack sized bags of chips with us on our last trip. Holy crap! I got pulled to the side, got searched head to toe and then had to wait as the agent went through every single item in my carry on with a little paddle type wand. We got to the airport 2 and a half hours early and barely were able to take a pee break before we were boarding. The metalized interior of the bag apparently sets off the scanner. Or, she was just being an arse. It is not on the restricted items list either, that I saw. Just a word to the wise.

EDIT: The rules have changed and you can take some foods with you through TSA.

However, the rules clearly state that if it won't pass the x-ray it's going to cause you a problem. Just buy food and drinks after going through TSA and avoid the hassle.

There is no way this process took 2 hours.

TSA agent was being an arse. A sealed, unopened bag of chips has never been a problem for me.

According to the TSA website, there are no restrictions on a bag of chips

Snacks

Carry On Bags: Yes
Checked Bags: Yes
Solid food items (not liquids or gels) can be transported in either your carry-on or checked baggage.

While true there are restrictions on items that won't pass x-ray and the metallic bag certainly wouldn't pass. It's right there in the TSA rules.

The aluminum used in potato chip bags is very transparent for X-rays, that bag would have to be a few mm thick on each side to screw up the scan

From the time we got there till we made it through security, yes, 2 hours. It took us about 30-40 minutes to get to security though.

We have never had the problem in the past which is why I was so surprised. She pretty much did everything but do a body cavity search on me. Must have been a bad day for her.

Sounds like she was just being a PITA. I've never had a problem with foods like that either.

Apparantley there have been changes at TSA in the last week. We flew out concourse B And saw a lot of the same thing.

All of our food got through okay but the people ahead of us had everything scanned...down to individual peppermints

TSA Security at MSY

This was your problem, MSY has the worst staff in the nation both TSA as well as the airport itself.

No but I am seriously considering it. We plan to do a lot more flying in the next few years so we are really considering it. Does it make the process faster/smoother? As a side note, we got pulled out of the line and got sent down a new security lane that just opened when we were leaving from MCO. The wait was about 30 minutes and we got to breeze on through. So, all in all, it seemed to balance itself out.

TSA Pre-Check makes the process smoother. So many people have it now that the lines are just as long as the regular scans. However, once you're past that line the scanning process is simple.

If you're considering it and you travel out of the country just get Global Entry. It's $100 instead of $85 and includes TSA Pre-Check. Many credit cards will credit you for the fee so other than time there is no cost to you.

Thanks,

What is the process to get Global Entry? We are planning several trips to Europe in the future.
