Bend/Sunriver, Oregon

We are planning our summer vacation for next year and have decided on Bend/Sunriver, Oregon. We booked a house in Sunriver and will be going in June. It’s a large family trip with ages ranging 65-6 years old. Give me your recommendations on things to do or places to eat. We’ve never been to the Northwest before. Some of us are going to fly into Seattle first to go to a Mariners game and then drive to Sunriver the next day, but that’s the only thing we have planned.

Crater Lake Nat. Park is about 1 1/2 hours south of Sunriver and is a must see. We were there June 17th this year. Just the south entrance was open because only a few miles of the road around the lake were cleared of snow. We creeped along in traffic for over an hour before we finally got to the entrance; but it was worth it.
We ate at Anthony’s in the Old Mill District in Bend and the fish and chips were very good.
Also, it was cold. Bring a jacket.

Thanks! That is around the time we are looking at going. We didn’t want to go in July because of the potential wildfires and the smoke. Did yall do any white water rafting? A few in our group want to do it and I didn’t know if the rivers were too rough for rafting during that time. We went to Denver in June this year and that’s what happened to us. We had a rafting trip planned but they closed the river because it was too bad.

We stayed at the Sun River Resort a couple of years ago in September. Great trip and location. The resort itself has golf, miles of hiking and biking trails. A marina you can rent tubes or kayaks.
Maybe 20 minutes to Bend.
Good "Things To Do" article.
DEFINITELY make the trek to Crater Lake. Maybe 1 1/2 hour drive. Most spectacular scenery you'll ever see.

I've only been to Bend once, but we enjoyed our time at the Midtown Yacht Club. The drink prices were decent and the service was great. The food truck lot in back had plenty of choices and I really liked the Mexican food I ordered. We only stopped in Bend to go to the last Blockbuster, so if you want a nostalgia hit I recommend it.

No, we were only in Bend 1 night as we were going to Klamath Falls for a family event. We went to Crater Lake on the way to KF from Bend.

If you are looking for a nicer dinner in Sunriver, South Bend Bistro is excellent and has a really nice outdoor patio right. Probably need reservations for a larger group in the summer.
In Bend proper, our favorite spots are Bosa and El Sancho
For breakfast, Jacksons Corner and The Lemon Tree are great.
For coffee, Thump is the best in town.
About a million good breweries in Bend proper. Sunriver Brewing is pretty solid also.
There's tons to do. You could be in Bend for a month and not hit everything. Highly recommend Newberry Crater and Smith Rock for hiking.
Can go rafting, mountain biking, kayaking, or tubing all from downtown.

You can actually go tubing in downtown Bend on the Deschutes River.
Sun River Brewing also has a location in Sun River (go figure). Ten Barrel, Deschutes (original Bond St. location), Boneyard, Ale Apothecary, and my personal favorite, Crux Fermentation Project are all close.
Smith Rock, Black Butte, and Cove Palisades (Lake Billy Chinook) are all nearby scenic/hiking opportunities.
If you are driving from the north, I would recommend going through Hood River, as you'll get up close to Mt Hood, and Hood River has awesome sail boarding, restaurants, and breweries/wineries, if you care to spend time there.

I live in Bend.
We work in Sunriver all the time and I still don’t understand why Sunriver (other than it’s cheaper to live in Sunriver than Bend).
Bend is where it’s at.
Someone mentioned Bosa in Bend. The food is highly rated but most items are overpriced. $70 for lamb chops is a bit over the top.
Check out Bar Rio downtown for great drinks and tapas.
Wild Rose Thai, also downtown, is off the charts and very reasonably priced.
McMenamins is also one hell of a good time. It’s an old school turned into a complex of hotel rooms, outdoor fire pits, bars and even a movie theatre. It’s a trip.
Here’s the current ‘Best of Bend’ 2024:
In Bend, check out Farewell Bend Park. From there you can hike along the Deschutes River Trail, which is stunning.
There are also intertube rentals for floating the Deschutes. Or just buy and bring your own and float down to the surf spot.
Bend controls the river flow mechanically, which allows for a man made wave in the river where there are always people surfing. Very cool to see.
The Old Mill district has a ton of stores like REI for walking around and people watching along the Deschutes.
You’ve made great choice. It’ll be a little smoky because of all the wildfires in the area but Bend will be less smoky than Sunriver, Sisters, Redmond, et alia.
I hope yall enjoy. LSU Forever.
ADD:
I took this photo overlooking Farewell Bend Park this June. Farewell Bend Park is in the upper right of the photo:

McKay Cottage is my go to for breakfast. Sit outside. They serve drinks while you wait to be seated. It’s a very busy/popular spot.
I love El Sancho tacos. I always get their tacos at their food cart located at Crux brewery which has a great view of the mountains. A huge grassy area that’s welcoming to all ages. I love Crux.
As mentioned you can float the river. There’s more people than ever that float the river so be forewarned.
Bringing your own tubes is the best way but not always an option for visitors. The rental places give you a 2 hour window to float once. I go all day. There’s a shuttle service that drives you back to the park for 3 bucks a person and that’s all day. I keep a cooler full of ice, beer, and jersey mikes Sammie’s in my rig and just reload every trip. I bring a waterproof bag for my speaker/phone. Everything gets wet going through the man made rapids if you hit it right
Look into getting a permit to hike the Green Lakes trail west of Bend. It’s a view that will knock your socks off. It’s not a strenuous hike but it isn’t the easiest either. So worth it! Very popular permit so learn about the process.
Newberry as mentioned.
Rafting the Deschutes in the Bend area is just ok. The best section to raft is located in Maupin. Search Oak Springs rapid Deschutes River on YouTube to see it.
If you go there make sure you tell the company you want to be in a raft that goes over Oak Springs rapid. It’s possibles you get stuck in the safety boat and they won’t tell you.

Bend/Sun River is in the shite today.
Level 1 wildfire status for most of Sun River; some areas of SR are at level 3 - mandatory evacuation.
In Bend proper, ashes are raining down from the sky like light snowfall. It’s semi apocalyptic - the sun looks wild:
Last Thursday when everything started to cook:
Today; 1400 hrs:
You can’t escape Mother Nature.
Good luck to my hurricane folks; my homeowners insurance is current in greater BTR.
The Gods can send you rain and fire, simultaneously.

Currently watching hurricane passing through which pushed my flight to bend from tomorrow to Friday. Based on your photos, Mother Nature gonna frick me twice in a week.
Anything I need to be mindful of regarding the fires? We will be flying into Portland Friday late morning and driving straight to Bend. Just there until Tuesday visiting family.

Nothing too serious here yet, download ‘watch duty’ if you don’t mind some anxiety but travel into Bend from the north (Sisters, Redmond) is your best bet right now.
We got some rain today and the ashes have subsided, for now.

Only way to hit Sisters going to Bend is a different route than going through Redmond. Obviously you know that but it’s confusing to non locals.
The best route to drive imo, view wise and having the ability to pass, is going 26/97 from pdx (through Redmond).

The last Blockbuster in the nation is in Bend.

I meant to express that coming to Bend from the North is your best option. Both Sisters and Redmond are north of Bend.
Good clarification.
