I would pay good money to not sit on a plane for a few hours so I don't see the benefit.
I was at lunch with a few buddies once and one guy was talking about the mileage runs he has done and i thought it was the most asinine thing I've ever heard.

10k mqm, you could do two runs to Seattle from DCA for $280 each so $560. Is that worth it? All same-day returns
And I thought I was crazy doing 8 segments... Where'd you overnight at?

HK>LAX>NYC in Business Class, but with Exec. Platinum status, so I was able to block seats next to me on AA
NYC>DFW>AUS in FC

For those that do travel and are close to the next level...it's often worth it simply in the additional miles that would be earned within the next year traveling at the higher level.
For instance, when I did mine, I was going from Delta Gold to Platinum. Trip cost me just over $200 but reaching platinum allowed you to select a medallion gift, one of them being a $200 credit for future travel. So the mileage run had a negligible out of pocket price to allow me the other benefits for Platinum.

IAH. I ended up getting a room on Hotwire for $35 at one of the airport hotels.

AA also has a sale right now going from DFW to Chicago for $80 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If you book it right you can fly on the Dreamliner. Not super far but you can't beat the price.

Saturdays available for that?
Yes, Oct 24, Oct 31, Nov 14, Dec 5. Below is the link for the 31st
Google flights
ETA: If you go through MSP and JFK, it's about 4941 miles. If going through SLC or ATL you're over 5,000.
Also look for Portland, DCA-PDX is $274 as well on Oct 31, Dec 5th.

I just checked and it's also available on Saturdays. I'll have to look into one of these.

How do you even go about the process of searching for these flights? I hit Gold on AA due to business travel, but have been about 10 short of platinum the last 2 years.

I look at flyertalk's mileage run forum, I browse google flights specifically for anything from the new orleans area. You're about 10 segments short or 10,000 miles short? If it's 10 segments there's some easy ways to get that for under $40 a segment. 10,000 miles is a little more maneuvering

the new-ish medallion rules have me confused.
I can't tell what exactly the 25,000 MQD "waiver" i've hit does for me. do i still need the $3,000 MQDs? or MQMs and MQSs?
i usually don't fly delta enough to reach medallion level, but i was hoping the new AmEx waiver would help. I'm not violently opposed to flying random places to hit Silver.
i am reading all the rules now but if you experts can easily tell me what i need to do, it'll save me a headache. TIA.

You need to hit one of the thresholds in the blue and one in the green to get status.

You must have the DL Gold Amex? If status is important to you it would behoove to have the Platinum or the Reserve for the MQM spending bonuses.

Was actually a segment run...cost me like $214 total.

Matrix - ITA or multi-city flight tab

You still have to hit 25,000 MQMs or 30 Segments. I'm a perennial Silver status user. Made Gold once 6-7 years ago. Could go on one of these runs and probably hit Gold again this year, but don't really care. Complimentary upgrades are the only thing I really care about and I get them with Silver...
