Anyone have a place they loved that they were told to skip?

Talking about this at work this morning. When I went on my honeymoon last December across Europe, we were told by a handful of people to just skip Vienna. Ended up being one of favorites.
My co-worker said this about about Dubrovnik when we went to Croatia and parts around there.
Also domestically this was brought up about Minneapolis.

We were told to skip Cinque Terre due to the crowds. Went anyway and found it to be extremely quiet in the evenings and at night. Only 1 day out of the 4 were what I would call crowded which must've been the day that a cruise ship docked.

Naples. Repeatedly, people will tell you that it's dirty, dangerous, corrupt, trashy....well, yes, but it's also gorgeous, fascinating, full of life, and "real" in ways that the more manicured parts of Italy are not.

I did not attend any sporting events, but I did ride the Circumvesuviana train for quite a distance & experienced the main train station too. It can be a chaotic place, but the pedestrian only streets of the Decumani (oldest part of the city) are visually and culturally very interesting.
I loved Palermo, too: another place that doesn't get rave reviews from the masses.

To be fair, most on this board (myself included) have always said that CT is far too crowded, but that it's nice at night and in the early morning before the cruise ships and other tourist groups show up.

I wasn't told to skip Paris, but I was told it was overrated. I loved Paris though.
Also, both times we went to Disney, people told us to just do AK for 1/2 day. It was our favorite park both trips because it was one you could take in slowly and really appreciate. No rushing from ride to ride.

One of the best kept secrets in Europe. Amazing street food (regarded as one of the top 3 along with Bangkok and Mexico City), great open-air style markets that are more Arab than European, amazing architecture from when it was the capital of The Two Sicilies/Kingdom of Sicily, ruins from WWII striking such a contrast, and the people are very much like Louisianans. Loud, outgoing, dance when music pops up, super friendly, and plain “real”/down to earth.
Also the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen.

The blue lagoon in Iceland.
It most definitely is a tourist attraction, but it was incredible. We would have stayed all day if we were able to.

I’ve never seen anyone say to skip the Blue Lagoon here. Not saying it’s never happened, I just hadn’t seen it before.
I really enjoyed it as well. Our plane landed at something like 5am and we went straight there, so it was pretty quiet when they first opened and we got to enjoy the sunrise. But It did start to get more crowded as the day went on, so that's when we bailed.

We got a Thanksgiving reservation at Eastern Standard based on your recommendation. If it sucks, I'm coming for you.

My family will be at an AirBnB in Fenway next weekend so I'll be close by. There's no Sonic in Boston, so if you want to check knuckles meet me at the Fenway location of Trillium, baw.
But ES is solid and I'm not concerned. Many posters here have eaten there and I've yet to have someone come back and say anything but positive things about their experience.

Haha I opened this thread with Vienna in mind, because it's definitely on my "meh" list and I know a lot of other people felt differently.
I have said I think living in Vienna for a month or something would be fun. It's just a hard city to crack on most traveling schedules, IMO.
A lot of people shite on Liverpool, and with some good reason, but it's a very interesting place.

one of my least favorite places, so depressing.
Vienna lacks pub like places but the rest was very impressive.

Pretty much every place not in Western Europe that I've been told is too dangerous or a shithole.
Love those places.

Stonehenge. I wasn't really looking forward to it, but people from work wanted to go.
I thought it was really cool to see, and couldn't believe how green the grass was ha.
Now I wouldn't recommend leaving London for it if you are on a short trip, but a Stonehenge, Bath, Oxford loop would be a good day trip.

speaking of, Bratislava is gonna be legit in 3 years. In December, they we're building at least 4 really nice high rise buildings downtown. Locals send they had a big boom, and were almost done with what will be the nicest train station in Europe.

Venice. Loved exploring the streets and canals off the beaten path.
