I was considering a trip to Venice in May.

Yeah, not happening now.

Yup. We got the word from Delta yesterday our flight to Milan in late April has been cancelled.

So much for Tuscany.

Thankfully we were able to get a refund on our accommodation bookings and Delta will allow us to re-book our flight.

So now it's a mad dash to figure out where to go instead of Italy.

Leaning towards Chile right now.

I have a Rome-Florence-Venice trip booked for latter half of May. Been booked since last July.

I'm gonna give it a couple more weeks to see how this thing shakes out. I can cancel before March 29 and get 85% of my money back.

Keeping a careful eye on the situation in East Europe and Germany. We have a Danube River cruise and stays in several cities booked for July. We don't have to make any decisions for a couple of months.

LOL. Going to change the subject from the corona. Tell me about this trip? Where are you going?

What do plan to see? July is a long ways away so you very well may still be going!

We will stay in London for a few days then fly to Budapest. Take a Viking River Trip on the Danube. Stay in Prague for a time - train to Berlin - fly to Munich - back to London and then home. We have booked an air tour over Bavaria, including Hitler's Eagles' Nest, and a few other side trips during the Danube cruise.

We're 50/50 on Spain in May right now. If we cancel we may hit Isla Mujeres for 10 days or so. I'll be bummed if we cancel Spain. We'll wait about 30 days more to make a decision.

40 stinking years. Been wanting to go to Europe and Italy especially. I booked a 17 day day trip starting April 18th.
The media has my wife freaking out so it looks like we are going to push to September 26th. I guess I will need to wait a while longer.
It will probably cost about $1K to make the changes.
Pretty damn bummed out.
But it gives more time to research and maybe talk her into staying a couple more days.

This seems like a bit of an overreaction so far. Spain only has just over 100 cases and hasn't even cancelled large scale events or anything. It is also highly likely to be on the downturn by May. Just play it by ear.

We are in France in just over a month and that is really starting to pick up cases, they have closed major sites and are cancelling large events.

I am starting to get concerned but haven't discussed it with my wife yet, who wouldn't cancel a trip unless the city was literally burning to the ground.

That sucks. Most travel can be rescheduled, and with this being such a potential global pandemic, companies seem to be more accommodating to alternate dates.

But a silver lining is that as you get into the fall you'll potentially get colors, less crowds, cheaper etc.

This corona could be anywhere, but maybe you can find some interim locations to tide you over in April? Mountains in North Carolina or Georgia are great. We go all the time. Vancouver Island is amazing. Olympic Peninsula in Washington? Watch the weather, but late April and May in Traverse City Michigan. Reminds me of Carmel California. TONS of wineries and great restaurants. Hiking. My favorite place in US.

Keep us posted!

???

We're still taking a wait and see approach. Like I said, we'll watch it and in about 30 days or so we'll make a final decision. We are in a higher risk age group and I do have a health issue or two which will factor into our decision.

Has anyone seen any flight deals? Or are the airlines just not offering anything right now due to not knowing what will happen even next week? Seems like there should be some good last minute deals popping up with all of these concerns and cancellations?

I'm not talking about to places like Italy, but maybe like Amsterdam or Berlin or places that have not had any or very very few cases?

We did the Romantic Danube on Viking a couple of years ago. Stayed in Prague for 3 days then hired a driver to Bamburg, then caught the boat in Nuremberg. Then stayed in Budapest for 3 nights. One of the best trips ever.

I had previously indicated that I thought that stand up type of travel and cruise organizations, like Viking, would eventually come to some decisions about their scheduled trips and do the right thing for their customers given it's a hospitality industry and image is everything.

We just got this email last night, so here's an example. This was a very generous offer by Viking. We haven't decided yet, but will probably watch current events to the very last moment or push the cruise into Fall 2021 as we are going to Czechia this December.

Dear Viking Guest,

As you undoubtedly know, the coronavirus COVID-19 is causing concern in the general public and among those of us engaged in travel. At Viking, the safety and security of our guests and employees has always been our top priority. We have implemented enhanced health screening procedures for all guests and staff before boarding our vessels and everyone is required to complete a health care questionnaire before embarkation. We continue to reiterate the importance of individual hygiene, sanitizing and washing of hands.

We continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely including the travel advisories issued by the U.S. State Department and information updates issued by the Centers for Disease Control in the U.S. and the World Health Organization in Switzerland.

This is a situation that can change from day to day, and we can well understand that the decision of whether or not to travel may be weighing on your mind – particularly for those with imminent departures.

In view of this we are for the time being making a temporary exception to our cancellation policy so that you can be free to postpone your cruise at any time up until 24 hours before the planned departure, without incurring any cancellation fees. You will be issued a voucher for future travel valid for 24 months, which can be used on any Viking product (river, ocean or expedition). This temporary exception to our standard cancellation policy is applicable for all guests who currently have a reservation with Viking and for all new reservations made through April 30, 2020.

The temporary exception to our cancellation policy is as follows:
• Notification of your intent to postpone your current cruise must be received as follows:
If you have flights arranged by Viking, it must be received at least 24 hours prior to the time of your flight's departure.

If you have arranged your own flights, it must be received at least 24 hours prior to the time of embarkation of the cruise or your hotel check-in, whichever is first.

• Cancelled reservations will be reimbursed in the form of a Future Cruise Voucher in the amount of 100% of all funds paid to Viking.
• Future Cruise Vouchers may be used toward any future river, ocean or expedition cruise with Viking and will be valid for 24 months from issuance.

If you have any questions, please contact your Travel Advisor or Viking at 1-833-900-0951, Monday through Friday, 4:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and Saturday to Sunday, 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM, PT.

We hope you will choose to join us as planned. We will continue to update you on any changes in itineraries or circumstance that may be relevant. In the meantime, we hope that this temporary exception to our policy will help put your mind to ease.

Sincerely yours,

Richard Marnell
Executive Vice President

Cancelling our trip to Tokyo for two weeks from now. Japan is massively underreporting the number of cases they have which has made things difficult. Trip insurance doesn’t cover pandemics so we may be out a lot of money.

Less worried about Covid. We’re perfectly capable of using good hygiene and understand the risks.

Reality is, almost all of the major attractions are closed. This is a once in a lifetime trip for us; so, we’ll reschedule until all of this is behind them. I hate the idea of going over and not being able to experience some of things we really wanted to.

Moreover, if the DOS moves the travel alert level while there we could be stranded for some time. No thanks, sucks as we were really looking forward to it.

This is what I've been watching for as well. I have seen deals on airfare to Hawaii but nothing else popped up on my radar so far. I'm following my travel blogs/sites pretty closely. I am hoping that deals start coming in a few months once all this has died down, and the travel industry is anxious to get people moving again. Bucket list here I come!

Have a 7 day trip to Panama scheduled for May. Unless all hell breaks loose, I'm risking it.
