Sticking with the history theme you can visit Mount Vernon. It’s an easy trip from DC.
Schedule a tour of the Capitol building and or White House with your Senator.
There are some great restaurants in DC. Georgetown is a great area full of young precessionals.

Spent a ton of time in D.C. over the years, so I have no need to do museums/monuments/touristy stuff anymore.
Beyond the "seat of government" stuff, museums, etc., D.C. is a pretty cool town in its own right.
I generally stay in Rosslyn (on the VA side) and walk across Key Bridge to Georgetown. Great neighborhood with plenty of stuff to do.
If you want fine dining, go to K Street. That's where our country is bought and sold to the highest bidder, so it stands to reason there are good restaurants for the lobbyists to take our whores to. And where the $$$ is, the good looking women are too...if good scenery is of interest to you.
Dupont Circle has some pretty good restaurants and bars.
Adams Morgan is a fun neighborhood with a little bit younger crowd.
The riverfront between Georgetown and the National Mall/Kennedy Center (technically Georgetown, just not the old town part) has some very good restaurants/bars.
Pick any of those and just cruise around on foot, eating, drinking your way across town.

That's not done in public places.
Not even their wives are allowed in unannounced.

Friend,
DC has a great church scene. The National Cathedral, Immaculate Conception, St John’s, St Stephen’s, St Mark’s, Georgetown Presbyterian, National Presbyterian, St Patrick’s, National City, Holy City, and Metropolitan AME all have beautiful buildings with lively congregations. DC is one of the best churched cities in America. You could easily spend a full weekend visit v these churches. National Cathedral deserves at least four hours.
DC also has some good grocery stores. Hana is probably the most important Japanese grocery in America. There are good chains like Wegmans, Giant and Safeway too.
Annapolis is not far away either and a day there eating crabs and visiting The Naval Academy when the weather is pretty is lovely.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

Drive in a 50 mile radius or expand it a bit and you’ll be hard pressed to find an area with more American history to explore.

I'm aware of the various private clubs around the NCR. But trust me, I've walked into many a K Street restaurant/bar and seen members of Congress sitting with lobbyists. It's not illegal, so they don't bother to hide it.

If you're ok driving about 45 minutes, go see the Naval Academy in Annapolis. Old Town Alexandria is interesting and has some good eats.

Music...Live music in Georgetown at places like Blues Alley. In summer there are band concerts in various parks. Outside of summer there is ensemble music in small venues...mostly museums. Biggest outdoor venue is Wolf Trap Park in N. Va.

When are you going to be there?
Oct 9 - 11 is the AUSA conference. Joining AUSA will get you free passes to the conference.
If you're into military defense / guns / technology, anything defense -- AUSA conference should be on your agenda.
I do not recommend going to the capital building if you are a registered republican.

Take a limo into the ghetto at 3 a.m. and buy some drugs from a baby on the corner.
