I hate doing this because it's our escape from NW Flroida and I would rather it not catch on, but.... check out Anna Marie Island. The water and sand are just like Destin and the Summer is their off season. Long Boat key is also nice but the sand is a bit more course, which is odd considering it is directly next to Anna Marie.

Nooooo.. Keep these 30A folks away

As someone else alluded, y'all are likely safe from that crowd. They are people looking for a 4-6 hour drive for a beach trip and not 10+ hours or a flight.

How is the seaweed situation generally in 30A? Or are the beaches fairly clean all of the time?

No, not all of the time. IDK the worst months though.

This year was the most I have ever seen but other than the June grass season, the seaweed is rare. When it does show up you can usually just move down 100 yards in either direction and find better water.

Went in July this year at Rosemary the seaweed was god awful almost everywhere down the beach. Unavoidable, had to go pretty far into the water to get past it.

Not bad at all last year

Does that mean it usually shows up and is worst in June?

I'm aiming for a possible May trip next year so curious if that would be before the seaweed would normally show up.

Or I guess I should rephrase this, what is the best time to go to avoid some of the crowds? I figured May would be good before Summer fires up but maybe September/October would be better? Not sure which month has better weather.

October in the panhandle is pretty nice. Weather is good and water is warm. Cool fronts don't hit until late in the month heading into November.

You want to go right after the kids go back to school in Atlanta.

The restaurant waits and traffic will be half what they were during peak.

Just be aware September into October usually brings either hurricanes or at least the threat of them so IMO adding trip insurance or checking cancellation policies are key.

October in Destin is pretty much paradise.

All the lodging rates are cut in half. Very low wait times at restaurants. Traffic is reasonable. Fishing is excellent. Weather is excellent and water is still warm. The only real downside is all the mini golf and waterslide attraction stuff is shut down.

Regarding kids in school, one perk to private school is you can go on vacation any time you want and you don't have to answer to the government administrators why your kid didn't show up for a week. You just email the teacher with a heads up that you'll be out of town.

Both of my kids are in private school, and if they miss too may days it becomes a problem.

Congrats. I mean that sincerely. One is expensive enough, two is very very expensive.

But one week out, can't you just say we're going to travel out of state for a family member's funeral, and chill at the beach for a week? What is the school gonna do, kick them out?

I just moved from destin (lived there for 10 years) and I have never been so happy to leave from an area. I absolutely hated living there.

The locals are trash and the tourists were annoying. The service in every aspect of life (restaurants, shops, work force, etc) were probably the worst I have ever experienced before in my life.

Moved to Georgia to a real city and after only a week of being here, the quality of life has already changed 150% for the better.

I live in a small town which is essentially a suburb of Nashville and everything you said is true. Little crime, great neighbors, inexpensive businesses.. The place where I can let my little guy run around the neighborhood while I'm home working and not worry.

Every time I go to Nashville for entertainment or business it reinforces how much happier I am living in a small town.

Going to that area is no longer a vacation

October is the best month. Low crowds and the water temp is usually warmer than the air temp. In October the water will look like a swimming pool.

This is what we decided to do. We will find something else to do during the summer.

A lot of it has been rebuilt but there was still a good bit of construction going on last time I was through there.

Area has changed though with what looks like a lot more large rentals and fewer down home retirees if that makes sense?
