Short time in cities you could spend a lot of time in. Especially Paris. Paris needs at least 5 imo.

That being said, for Paris:

Eiffel
Louvre
Notre Dame
D’Orsay
Catacombs (not essential but with kids would be great)

Food, I have no idea with the kids.

Barcelona:

I’m going in March so I don’t have first hand experience yet. But obviously Segrada Familia and the Gothic Quarter.

My kids liked La Rôtisserie d'Argent and les Relais Entrecôte in Paris. Both were very kid friendly.

+1 on Relais d’Entrecote being kid friendly. Sliced steak, and as many fries as you can eat. What’s not to like? No choice except for dessert.

The funicular up the hill in Montmartre to Sacre Coeur is kinda fun, and the views at the top are cool.

Two of my favorite cities. In 2016, we spent a week in Barcelona then took the train to Paris for a week. It was our 1st time to Barcelona but we have been to Paris many times. In Barcelona, go to the Gaudi sites. Sagrada Familiga is a must. Make reservations on line a couple of days in advance. The kids would like Park Guell. Make reservations in advance as soon as you know the weather will be nice for that day. If you are not having Gaudi overload, the two downtown mansions are must sees...... Stay in the Old town, either in El Born or the Gothic Quarter. There are some great restaurants there...... We stayed at the K&K Picasso Hotel which I highly recommend. The hop on hop off bus stop is right outside the door. ..... As far as Paris , where do I start? What part of town are you staying in?

Great stuff guys...

Haven’t booked a place yet. With a family we’re debating doing the AirBnB or VRBO route. Setting up near the Big Bus locations or a landmark ideally.

From Barcelona take the train down to Tarragona, a smaller city right on the Med with lots of Roman stuff. Take a cab out to the three tiered high Roman aquaduct and walk across it, way up in the air with your kids, the same way that Spanish school children their age do. If you or your spouse are cooks, you'll see fields of wild rosemary and thyme at the base of the structure.

Walk the city wall and see how the city is evolving.
The museum with many, many roman mosaic floors and let your children identify what they see on the tiles.

let them get to know La Rambla, go home late afternoon and nap so they can do La Rambla at night.

Some great small bakeries near La Rambla as well as butcher shops.

In Paris, the catacombs were my kids favorites. We went in the winter & still had lines. I don't recall exactly how it works, whether you buy tickets in advance or not. It seems like we had to get up & wait in line kinda early. If you do this, it's an hour walk underground w/ skulls & bones you can touch. It's self-guided so you're at your own pace. You go underground near one Metro station & come out in another part of the city. If you do this it is imperative to bring multiple flashlights, likely one for each person.

Just got back from Paris yesterday. Went with my 12 year old daughter. She loved the catacombs, and I enjoyed them too. Yes, you can buy tickets ahead of time for a specific entry time, and it is absolutely worth it (for the Eiffel Tower too). You don't really need a flashlight. We used our phone flashlights a couple of times to peak down some halls that were gated off, but the tunnels are otherwise decently lit.

in barcelona go to the market on las ramblas. the place is huge and old. all kinds of fish, meat, poultry, flowers, colors. it is amazing. La Barquerita(?) also walk the El Born area.
in paris walk the Seine Banks and St Germaine Blvd. the above posters had great suggestions too.

Barcelona is my favorite European city. All of what geauxpurple said is solid advice. Also I did not enjoy the beach at all. We did an Airbnb, and it wasn’t great, so I’d avoid it for a traditional hotel.

Try a cooking class one night. We did a paella class, and it was great.
