I think there’s some scenarios they definitely make sense. Usually spots with big open clean runouts. Alaskan heli skiing they have probably saved hundreds of lives since they’ve come into play.
My buddy Charlie who got slid used to ride with one. Trees were his main enemy in this slide. You can make a case that the airbag helps protect the head as well as floatation. Luckily he never hit his head on the ride.
He had a GoPro on and he was on top of the snow for the whole time but just kept getting ping ponged off trees. We hypothesized he would’ve ended up near where I found his snowboard and likely on top of the snow. If he had been on skis he probably could’ve stopped himself on the first tree he hit. It bounced right in the middle of his board.
ok, this makes sense. the backcountry stuff I visit most often is in a burn scar, so good sight lines but LOTS of dead trees still standing. even the sidecountry at bogus basin has lots of trees to navigate (and smaller bowls with shorter runs) where the airbags might not make as much sense. best wishes man, there is still lots of snow out there (and more coming this early spring) - enjoy!

Spring skiing is wide open in Colorado. Breck has logged over 25 inches in the last 10 days with more coming today.
Often, the conditions are milder , and the powder is better, in late March and early April in the Summit County area. Make plans and enjoy some great late season conditions.

That is a nasty slab. And at 35-40 degrees or so, in the wide open away from the trees, it makes sense that the crown was where it was. Your buddy just hit it at the wrong part, could happen to anyone.
So far, I have never had to use my beacon or my shovel, aside from digging snow pits. But even if you are careful, like you mentioned, each time you head out into the backcountry, you are increasing your exposure. I have yet to be humbled, but it only takes one time. Very happy that no one was seriously, seriously injured. You ski with a lot more frequency than I do, and that was just your unlucky time.
Makes you shudder, because no matter how careful you are, this is an inherently risky activity.

Bogus Basin got 24 inches in 24 hours this weekend. I went out on Friday and Sunday. I guess that means mountain bike season is going to be a little later this year...
Did you guys see this video of a boarder getting dug out of a tree well? A solid argument to always carry (and know how to use) avy gear, even if you're skiing in bounds!

I'm starting to plan my 2024 trips. I'll be taking a spring ski trip(first week in April). My usual spots are Park City and Steamboat but due to elevation are looking elsewhere.
I've never done Beaver Creek but am thinking this might be a good option. Anyone have experience with spring skiing at BC?

We have done BC several times for Spring Break including the last week of March this year. Conditions have been good every time except 1 trip but it was crappy everywhere that season. Now the drive back to Denver last Friday was miserable. Got in our car at the Bear Lot and left at 3:45pm and didn’t get to our hotel near DIA until 10:15pm. Took over 5 hours to get to the tunnel.
We are actually planning to go to PC next spring break and have been several times there and other places in Utah and normally have good to great conditions.

It was a good season. Over a little soon after breaking a bone in my shoulder last week.
Still over 360k vertical feet skied this year. 22 days on the mountain.
Jealous of yall getting to go deep into spring.

It was a little sketchy at Copper last Tuesday. Refreeze cycle that never thawed, covered in a little powder. Hence the whole broken shoulder thing I got going on.
Everyone has said the past few days have been great though. Starting to get slushy out there this weekend too.

Wrapped up my season last week in Colorado, was terrific spring skiing. Started out at Winter Park on Tuesday, 8 inches of fresh snow had fallen which made for great conditions.
The place was fairly empty, I lapped the Pano lift all day which was fun since the last time I was at Winter Park it was either closed due to wind or packed with crowds. Pretty much hit every run off the lift, lots of fun terrian and paths through glades/trees that it never got old. Only got one day at WP since I had to drive back to Denver to pick up some family members that were getting into town to ski with me later in the week.
Thursday was able to sneak off to A-Basin for a half day, was a beautiful but chilly morning
Spent most of time skiing Montezuma bowl in the morning sun, was able to find some soft snow on Northern Spy, Black Bear and Long Chute. The groomers were also fast and fun. Of course no trip A-Basin wouldn't be complete without going up Pali and hitting the spine.
Friday and Saturday was skiing with my family at Keystone, we got a nice deal on a condo in River Run Village for three nights. I had never skied Keystone before while I didn't get to ski much advanced terrian I had a lot of fun skiing the blues with my family who were skiing their first time outside of the Midwest. Keystone was really the ideal place to get their feet wet.
Skied 31 days this season, probably the best season I have had yet. Had some incredible powder days, including two 17 inch storm days at Revelstoke and Steamboat.

If you're done for the year post your stats! Ikon and epic apps both record them. It's looking like we might get more snow here on Thursday so I'm not done yet

Good luck with your recovery and PT.

I think it’s time for someone to fire up a thread for next season already.

Luckily, my season still goes.
Headed to the Bird 4/19 for three more rides before my season ends. The Wasatch has recorded some of the highest snowfall in twenty years. 800+ inches. Hopefully there will be some left when I get there.

The Ikon app didn't work at Sun Peaks or Revelstoke, it also had issues with Aspen so 8 days are not accounted for...

If I lived in Denver or SLC, I would probably be over 60. I could ski a lot of weekdays with my job.

7 great days this year. On January 19, I thought my season was over. But now I’m strongly considering Mammoth in June. I’ll be sure to bump the thread while y’all are at the beach.

Might sneak off to SLC for one last hurrah the first weekend of May. I have a ton of snowbird days and with their base I think it might still be worth it.
