My daughter and I are heading to SLC for the 1st week in January. My brother lives in Bountiful, and we are finally taking him up on his offer to come up in the winter. Never been up in the winter so this will be new to us.

Told my daughter yesterday, and her jaw hit the floor. Needless to say we are both very excited about the trip. Wife and one year old didn't want to go so it'll just be the two of us.

Going to be in Breckenridge the 2nd week of December. Haven't booked a resort yet but looking between One Ski Hill, Grand Lodge, or Crystal Peak. Anyone have any experience or suggestions between the 3? One Ski Hill is quite a bit more expensive but if it's worth it then I'm ok with it.

Are you committed to a resort rental? Lots of good ski in/out options on Four O’Clock Run that can be lower priced in early December.

Bustang

We're taking the train from the airport to Union Station, then hopping on the Bustang to get to Vail. Going to end up being a ton cheaper than the CME or whatever Epic calls it now.

We were committed to a resort. Might try something different next time but since no one has ever been to Breckenridge or even skiing we figured we would be better off at a resort. We chose Crystal Peak because it was significantly cheaper than One Ski Hill and we will still be able to use that resort and amenities if we choose.

That’s a great property, I’d expect. You can use the gondola to skip up to Peak 8 for ski school lessons and and access to more green runs. Please consider ski school for your first day...great investment for beginners. Have fun.

Received an invitation to join a small ski expedition to the coastal mountains of British Columbia this April. A helicopter operation out of Whistler-Blackcomb will drop us off at basecamp for 5 days in a mountain range that has seen very little to no ski traffic. So we're expected to be making first descents. Super expensive trip, but a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Now to raise the funds, and get in killer shape!

Awesome! Where, exactly?

Maybe you could bag Mt. Robson while you are up there.

Cadwallader Range. Looks like there are a bunch of peaks named after the Lord of the Rings

Zahan Billamoria is leading the expedition, and he's a certified all-around badass. Lead Exum guide and heads safety on big missions for TGR. We got linked up with him after talking to him at an avalanche awareness night last year. His guide 'protege' has worked with me a ton on all aspects of mountain travel, but especially, getting into more serious ski mountaineering lines.

Here's Z leading some TGR atheletes down a Teton Classic: The Apocalypse Couloir

Wanted to start my own topic, but figured I'd try this thread first:
My wife and I (both 39) decided on a VERY last minute skiing trip for the family. We are leaving Sunday and coming home Friday (MSY). We have 3 kids (10, 8 and 1.5). We are looking for a very nice resort but not upscale luxury and good ski area option for the family for the two older kids to learn, for us to ski (intermediate skiers), and childcare for the toddler.

We are leaning Breck at Beaver Run resort cause we like Breck for skiing and the town for the atmosphere.

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated!

Well,I love Breck for a family trip with skiers of all levels, so I’m not steering you elsewhere.

And I’m sure Beaver Run will be just fine. We’ve always loved the Four O’clock Run corridor for condo options.

Thank you! We've narrowed it down to River Run village condos at Keystone (much better price, kids ski free and lots of kids activities) and Beaver Run resort. It seems a little nicer in Breck at Beaver Run, but almost twice the price of Keystone!!!

Booked the flights last night and going to make a decision and nail down the lodging today.

Travel tip...on the way in, hit Smoking Yard BBQ in Idaho Springs . Easy on/off I 70 and great food.

That is awesome. Some great skiing in that area (I grew up around there).

Ski mountaineering is something that I am really interested in but something that I am not sure I have the time to jump into. I only get 15-40 days a year, and it is difficult for me to justify the mountaineering aspect. Particularly, getting to the point where I would feel safe. I would love to ski some of those lines, but it really is less about skiing and more about mountaineering.

Good choice, you will all spend tons of time on Schoolmarm run.

Keystone does have a lot for the kids - tubing, the ice castle and a little play area at the base. The resort itself has a few places to eat and some shops, but it's plenty for novice skiers and a family.

River Run condos are nice, easy access to the lifts and I think it has hot tubs/pool.

Have fun!

For Anyone Considering Jackson Hole

It’s been warm and dry all month, and there’s been little snowfall. The resort has been able to make some snow, but not a lot.

LINK

I would avoid making December plans until we see a change.

Colorado has had a dry November after a heavy October. But, we are about to get pounded for the next week and a half. They are calling for feet near telluride.

Colorado residents, any chance Vail opens more than one lift and 4 runs next week?

I wasn't expecting the whole resort to be open this early, but I was certainly expecting more than what's listed currently.

I'm thinking about postponing this trip if thats all that's going to be open....

Well we are getting a lot of snow out there right now through tomorrow. More snow is expected Sunday in the mountains. I would say they could possibly open a few more runs... It’s early season. Breck/keystone has the most open in Colorado right now with about 13 runs open. Breck said they are opening a few more runs up this weekend.

For the trip to Breck in a couple weeks we're looking at renting ski's from either Black Tie or Breck sports. There is a Breck sports in our resort. Any suggestions between the two?
