Girl from my high school lives out in breck and went to ski monarch on monday with a friend. Skied all morning then in the afternoon somehow crossed an unmarked barrier and became disoriented. They weren't rescued until today at 3pm (about 48 hours later) and taken to salida hospital, where they were then airlifted to denver university hospital for severe frostbite to extremities. Only reason they're alive is they built a snowcave. Sorry for the debbie downer post, hope everyone stays safe out there

Damn. That's scary. Lotta stories like that every year, and I can no doubt see how it can happen. Steamboat has a big problem about people going OB into Fish Creek Canyon and getting lost or cliffed out.
Glad she made it. 48 hours she won't ever forget. Major props to search and rescue. Those guys are badasses and usually volunteers doing a super dangerous job. This year has been some crazy avalanche activity making backcountry rescues even more difficult for a lot of these cases.

Wow, that sounds terrifying.
Can anyone recommend a brand of ski boots? I'm 6 days removed from my last day of skiing and my ankles are still killing me. I've been browsing sun and ski sports and it looks like I can get a pair anywhere from $200-$400. I figure they will last a while and if I'm skiing every year it is worth it.

I snowboard but have family that skis and they all say to go to a professional boot fitter to get boots and not buy online. It's worth the extra money to go that route to get the best fit possible

Frick Sun & Ski. Rips offs. That price range you listed will only get you rental-quality-at-best boots from Sun n Ski, and they'll be heavy/clunky AF. If you ski every year, spend a little more and get better boots. Look at K2, Technica, Lange, Atomic or Salomon. They all have different price ranges of models of boots. Or a step up to a much lighter boot in Scarpa, Dynafit, or Garmont. Boots are the most important thing you'll buy for skiing (besides BC necessities), look at them as the motor to your car. You definitely want to try boots on before buying. Once you find a pair you like that has stability, fit, and comfort that you like, make sure and get them heat molded to your feet. Like with most gear, you get what you pay for, and with boots you want quality, not crap.
If you can, try on first, then look online for better prices (backcountry, evo, etc). Any box store will price match against American online retailers and vice versa.

I plan to try them on in person, but Sun and ski sports has most all those brands that you listed. what am I missing?

Then when/if you find a pair you like there, do an online search before buying to try and find a lower price from an online retailer and get S&S to price match. If they try to give you the shipping cost BS, most online retailers have free shipping (even 2-day) for orders well below the amount a pair of boots costs (i.e. backcountry is free 2-day shipping for orders over $50).
Good luck. Boots are super important. Choose wisely for yourself. They'll last you a very long time going once a year.

Make sure you store them properly in between seasons. Buckle them up and make sure all the plastic is in the correct place so nothing is being pinched.
I've seen some of our renters have really nice boots be f'd up because they just crammed them in their ski bag and never saw them again until the next seasons ski trip.
Own boots make renting skis a breeze for ski techs and yourself. Hand us your boot. We fit it to binding. Done. You could buy a demo line package at certain stores and try a bunch of skis throughout your trip.
And make sure you get a correct size. Don't give yourself too much room. Snug like a firm handshake. Toes touching the end while standing up straight in boots is a good thing as your foot will slide back when in skiing position. Movement is a bad thing inside a ski boot. You want all your energy to go straight to turning the ski, not your foot slipping around in your boot.

Anybody hit the mountain this past weekend? I hung out at Copper all weekend and it was pretty solid for no new snow in the past 5 days or so
Weather doesn't look particularly promising moving forward, so hopefully that changes soon

Taken a few laps here and there this weekend. Had a long day on Friday out at the Boat.
Got Wed-Th off the next two weeks. Might make it down to Summit this week to see some Bama friends visiting. Then the next week I might be chasing pow on a trip.
Golfer is coming into town on Friday I believe.

I have Avy 1 this weekend in RMNP then would be down to chase pow depending on where you go. I've had Jackon Hole, Squaw, and Alta/snowbird on my radar as of late

This past weekend I was at Jackson Hole.
Not much new snow but when a place is that steep and has a decent base, all is good.

So it was pretty solid overall? How does it compare to other places you have been?
Posted on 1/30/17 at 12:30 pm to HippieTiger
Very soild. Advanced terrain (35 degree throughout).
I've been twice now - '12 and '17.
I'd put it second on the list of places I've been.
Big Sky
Jackson
Mammoth
Wolf Creek
Steamboat
Keystone
Breckinridge
Copper
Mt High (CA)

Damn baw, that is a solid list of places visited
Of the places I have been to on that list (all the Colorado mountains), I tend to agree with how they are ranked

I've been riding for 20 seasons now and the list would be much longer if I had not spent half of those years going to Steamboat.
