Just got back from 3 days at Breck. Covered the entire resort - including my first time on all of the high mountain bowls. Going off the top of peak 8 down Whale's Tale was freaking amazing.

I am going skiing for the first time at Lake Tahoe for a bachelor party at the end of February. What are some specific workouts I can do to minimize soreness? Trying to prepare by getting in a routine of lifting weights and running.

The ski fit class I do at my local climbing gym is more calisthenics and agility exercise based. Cardio will definitely help too, especially coming from sea level.

I haven't found anything that minimizes soreness except Ibuprofen.
Some of the guys I rode with do stair climbs and stadium runs but I'm not so sure it really helps.
Alternating muscle groups while riding, Ibuprfoen and hot tubs beers have always been my cure all for soreness.

I find skiing really works my calves. Get on a treadmill with the incline at 10 and walk at a brisk pace, 3mph+. But realistically, your body will be aching like it never has before and soreness is unavoidable.

I used to do a bunch of air squats preseason. You think they wouldn't get ya, but you do a good bit of them and your legs will feel the burn like skiing the next day. Some lunges in there work good too.

Do some "blasters" if ya want your legs to really feel it. ^^^

Buncha free loaders outside my window today.

It looks like they taped the window pane for your troubles though.

It's snowing again. Finally.

Has there been any consensus on the mountain that's gotten the best snow this year? Sounds like it got a slow start (I.e. When I went to aspen in December) but has really turned it around. Really hoping for good snow in vail/bc when I go in march.

No real consensus winner in Colorado. Maybe Crested Butte. They had a hell of a January.
Got Wednesday-Thursday off this week. Think I might make a road trip up to Jackson Hole and bum it in my car. No promises on a spread eagle into Corbetts, but if I'm there, I'm skiing it.

Wolf Creek always gets the most consistent and best snow in CO. Without looking I'd say CB is second
I finished up the avy 1 course today. Had aspirations of dragons tail but wasn't in the cards. Rode the hippie trees past dream lake and the dream lake chutes. Solid day of touring and worn the hell out

Buff Pass in Steamboat usually battles Wolf Creek for the most snow.
Unfortunately the snow that falls on Buff doesn't always translate to the resort.
How was the course?

Heading to CB on Feb 18 for a week and hoping they continue their trend. Long range forecast shows some promise. Haven't had a powder day since my trip to Wolf Creek in Dec. 2015.

The course was meh overall to be honest. If you haven't been to avy 101 courses at local mountain shops, read books like Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain and Snow Sense, or gone out and actually practiced search and rescue digging out a hidden beacon then I would imagine it would be more beneficial and feel worth the $400-$500. I've already done all those things and read the CAIC observations and reports daily. Wind loading on easterly slopes above treeline was no surprise
Jackson is getting pounded right now. That trip would be well worth it this week. I'll be chasing pow that way soon but have the parents coming in Thursday this week

Interesting to note for the class. Just haven't been able to get time off work to make it make sense for me this winter. Down a person at the ski shop makes for not a lot of time off requests. Especially to spend $400 bucks. I'll definitely take it sometime this winter or next.
I'm excited to get up to Jackson. Gonna have to leave at like 8 or 9 tomorrow night. Make it as far as I can. Sleep in the car a little, then get to the resort in time for opening tram.
Hopefully gonna meet up with some locals since I'll be flying solo. I'll just find any of the hundreds of pro skiers to follow around the resort.
My boss at the ski shop is letting me borrow his US Ski Team gold pass that gets ya 50 days each at nearly every resort in the US so getting hooked up on that front.
