Are you going to move there? Or a second home? If you need any recs on trusted people there, let us know. We have a ton of connections there now.

Eventually, we plan to spend about 3-5 months there per year. My wife (no pics) has EU citizenship, so we aren’t limited to the 90 days within 180-day period. But we’ll rent it out during the summer months.

We would love to be connected with any trusted people you’ve met over there. Also, my wife is an FSU grad and I went there for grad school. So perhaps we already have a few mutual acquaintances.

We drove to Taormina, Sicily from southern Italy via ferry. Didn’t plan to stay the night but liked it so much we did. Absolutely beautiful city.

Syracusa is amazing and bridges the gap between small and big city in my opinion. Small enough to walk around and big enough for lots of shopping and restaurants.

I have been to Italy several times and you see all the tourist warnings about Italy having a bit of c'est la vie attitude and not being in a hurry for things. I have never found this to be the case. Then I went to Sicily. Holy hell.

We were in a five star hotel in a suite (lots of hotel points) and the water just quit working for two days. I was pretty pissed by day two. The staff reacted like you would see in a movie. Shrugged shoulders, quizzical look as to why I was upset and an offer to use a gym shower in the basement. So be prepared for the true Italian experience. Not a knock on Sicily as I loved my time there. Just a one of one experience to set expectations.

Nice place you got there! That's awesome. My wife and I love central and southern Italy. Probably our favorite region on the planet. Spent a couple weeks last year doing Bari, Matera, and Alberobello in addition to some time in Sicily.

Didn't make it to Monopoli as it didn't really hit our radar when we were planning. Would be curious to know more about it. Any other towns you'd compare it to? Looking at pics, it reminds me of Syracuse...

OP, if you liked Cortona, you would love Matera. Be sure to put a pin in that one.

Just here to say your approach to life is badass. I think I've shared this in other threads. I love people who live like this. Well done!

We had a villa with a pool near Mt. Etna for 3 nights. Could see the volcano and the ocean. It was located between Taromina and Ortigia. Flew into Catania. Beach clubs are a huge thing on the coast. Reserve chairs ahead of time for the day at one. They can get spendy in Taromina, but outside of there, its not an awful cost.
Also, check out the interior of Sicily. We did an awesome canyon River tour with cliff jumping in Alcantara Gorge. The water is 50 degrees year round.

Thanks everyone for the recs! Going through them all and will let you know what we end up doing. My first instinct several months ago was a split week between Taormina and Syracusa.

Really enjoyed the drive along the north part of Sicily. Also the drive from Palermo down to the valley of the Temples and east along the southern coast was beautiful. Like traveling back in time.

Wow. Beautiful place. We just got back from 2.5 weeks in Italy last night. Spent the last few days in Monopoli and day-tripped to Bari, Ostuni, Alberobello, and Polignano a Mare.
Food was excellent.

Our local guide did mention in the off season, she works with a real estate
company helping folks from US buy homes.

Buying in Monopoli. Hmmm..

Awesome trip. Which city did you like the best? Buying in that area is pretty great because the peak season is summer (hot as balls) when we don't want to ever use it, so we have a free vacation home.

Pre-spring I spent a week in Madrid, another week in Sicily, and 4 days in Rome.

It was amazing - all of it. Honestly, Sicily is frikkin huge and was my fav by far. You should spend that entire time there. I wish I had. I am into history and hiking and was doing 1 hike and 1 city per day on the island. I went in Feb and was so glad I went then. In just a few months I am going back to Portugal and either northern Sicily or Greece next trip trip. Bottom line is you are gonna want to go back anyway, don't leave any stones unturned. Enjoy.

We are buying a place in Monopoli soon. Would you mind if I asked you a few questions?

I have no personal experience buying over there, but there is an American couple with a blog and YouTube channel about travel to Italy, and they bought land and built a house in the Le Marche region.

Their blog gets into the details of dealing with banks, notary, tax issues, etc. You might find it interesting.

Our Big Italian Adventure

The husband recently had a medical emergency over there, got a chopper ride to a bigger hospital and stayed there 12 days. Total bill was less than 6,000 Euros. Then he used his Med-Jet type insurance to be flown back to the US on a tiny, high speed jet with a medical crew. They posted a video about the entire experience. It is worth a watch for Americans who are considering what might happen in a medical situation when abroad, and what insurance they might want to get.

Liked them all, but if I had to pick, probably Monopoli since it was not overrun by cruise ship excursion groups.

We spent the first part of the trip in the North. Valle d' Aosta, Lombardi, Piedmont, and Veneto regions. Different vibe than the South, but beautiful in its own right.

There are so many cool towns in Southern Italy. We have a car so we end up doing a lot of day trips. Next time you go back, check out Lecce. Awesome historic section.

If you ever go back and want to use our house, just hit me up

Heard about Lecee, but didn't make it there. Thanks for the offer, much appreciated.

Or should I say Grazie.
